What was originally supposed to launch last month, the Steam Soundtrack Sale is now live as Valve celebrate the new feature of the Steam store and client dedicated to Soundtracks.

As a brief reminder, for developers who do upgrade their DLC to a Soundtrack it means that people can purchase it and download without needing the whole game. It's a nice touch and a much better way to do it, might even give developers a boost in sales. Having a dedicated music folder is nice so you don't need to hunt down inside each game to find the files. Anyway, it's a massive improvement on the old system and shows how Valve keep improving for the benefit of users.

There's an issue with the new system though if you're on the Linux Beta client, as the Play Album button doesn't work which might be linked to a recent issue I reported where the Manage Screenshots button doesn't work. If you see that issue, reverting to the normal Steam client will fix it. Hopefully Valve will fix that before the current Beta updates go live for everyone.

What are some of your favourite game soundtracks? Give your fellow GOL readers some suggestions on what to pick up in the comments. Steam already has well over 900 DLC converted to this new format, so there's a huge amount to pick from.

If you want to just play around with it soundtracks from multiple Valve games are free including Portal, Portal 2, Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and more.

You can see the deciated sale page here.

Anyone know if there's a way to list all the dlc for games you own all together? The sale page lists a few games I own in this way, but I'd like to see all of them at once to make it easier to shop for their soundtracks.

EDIT - never mind, found the solution, at least for ones on sale: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/0/1629663905429718892/#c1744512174758588856

EDIT 2 - steamdb seems kind of broken with this feature, it only lasts a few game dlc in sale from game I own, there should be a lot more listed 🤨

Does anyone know how to get the flac files? Ash of Gods has mp3 and flac but Steam only seems to download the mp3s and I don’t see any option related to this.

From their FAQ:
QuoteWhat formats are soundtracks available in?

By default, every soundtrack contains a full set of MP3 files. Soundtracks can also contain a free secondary set of audio files (for example, FLAC) that offer higher quality than compressed MP3s. These files are often larger and many customers prefer just the MP3s, so downloading these additional files is optional. You can opt in to larger downloads on the Music page in Steam Settings.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number Soundtrack banned in Australia because the game is banned.

I wonder... Am I the only one to not buy soundtracks on game stores (GOG, Steam etc)?
And have you same issues as banning/censorship when buying music on Bandcamp for example?

It is only banned on game stores in Australia. I can buy some of the songs on Bandcamp.

Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams - as a guy who loaded Giana Sisters on C64 just to listen this one is a must
Planetary Annihilation - a wonderful orchestral experience

So far, I've downloaded Portal, Portal 2, and Half-Life soundtracks.

This is a nice thing for us, because we can appreciate video games OST more widely.

I am missing Soundtracks for my all time favorites: Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer.
