Valve have released a new Steam Client Beta which pulls in a couple of Linux improvements and they appear to be preparing a new Proton version with a tweak for Half-Life: Alyx.

For the Steam Client Beta they fixed some Library layout regressions and Remote Play got a fix for muted audio when streaming after an RDP session. On the Linux side, here's the changes:

  • Steam runtime 0.20200318.1:
  • Updated to latest version of libvulkan, exporting more WSI functions for Proton
  • Runtime diagnostic tool improvements

Additionally, an eagle-eyed user on Twitter sent a tip showing that Valve appear to be readying the next version of Steam Play's Proton software. Looking on SteamDB, Proton 5.0-5 appeared on March 18 and continues to be worked on. It could be today, it could be next week, Valve don't seem to stick to any schedule for their Proton releases.

If you missed it, Valve mentioned to GOL their aim for Half-Life: Alyx is to have it working in Proton and post-release add Vulkan plus Linux support. Seems Proton is being setup to have a simple tweak ready for it.

Hopefully Proton 5.0-5 will also include patches to get Doom Eternal up and running, but maybe it also needs a gpu driver update. At least with 5.0-4 it seems not to work so far.
Well, maybe I should try Doom Eternal on Stadia. Really a pity Bethesda is not interested in supporting Desktop Linux, though ID Software once released well working Linux binaries for their games (Doom 3, Quake 4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars...).
Otherwise, HL:A will be the next hype game to be played ;)

proton 5.0-4 broke shadow of war for me. Had to revert to proton 4...hopefully this will get it right again.

I'm a bit confused. Is Doom Eternal working or not on Protom yet? Unless denuvo is supported in proton I'm guessing we will have to wait like we did with Doom?

Atm it doesn't work, people can't get it to run according to the github issue. It seems Vulkan driver related, but might also be additionally Denuvo related.

Hopefully Doom Eternal will be working - I'm prepared to wait whilst clever people work on it. :)

I'm waiting for Borderlands 3 patches, eagerly, so I can play multi-player online. Maybe Borderlands 2 patches as well. I tried to play online with my brother-in-law for the first time since I'd installed BL3, and it wouldn't connect for the first time ever.

Of course, it mightn't be an issue if Aspyr got off their Asspyr and patched Borderlands 2 already.

I just read an interesting article about Denuvo in Doom Eternal. the tl,dr is that the Doom Eternal came with it's an additional .exe folder that is Denuvo-free. Yup, someone at Bethesda included a crack for their own game. :D It might be something to check out.

Yeah, I read that as well, but people tested Doom Eternal with Proton/Wine/Lutris and this denuvo-less exececutable already, but no luck.
After this faux-pas Bethesda could also remove Denuvo already... oh dear, I don't want to be that person who left that file in.

A lot of Denuvo games work with Proton, they even corrected Denuvo-related bugs recently for Arkham Knight and Just Cause 3
