As expected on their biweekly development cycle, the Wine hackers released the latest development version with Wine 5.5 out now with new features and fixes.
Quick reminder: Wine is the software that can help run Windows games and applications on Linux.
Here's the highlights of what's new:
- Builtin libraries use the new UCRTBase C runtime.
- Compatibility mode used when reporting Windows version.
- Better support for debug information in PE files.
- Support for linguistic case mappings.
- More attributes supported in WebServices.
They also mentioned 32 bug fixes, some of which were fixed in previous releases of Wine that eventually saw some retesting. These noted bug fixes include issues solved for: Call of Juarez, Death to Spies: Moment of Truth, Adobe Flash Player, Might and Magic VI, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Audiosurf, Dark Souls 2, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem (no more blob heads) and more fixes for games went in.
You can see the release notes here.
I've also been hearing lately about a lot of work going on to help with Media Foundation in Wine, as this is needed for quite a lot of Windows games to work properly on Linux with Wine. The Media Foundation API is used on Windows for various video and audio purposes and it's been another pain-point for people using Steam Play Proton (which uses Wine). You might find some games have no intro video, or a static background instead of a video and more—all of it getting slowly fixed up so it will be good to see that eventually done.
Quoting: legluondunet@anarus, it recently works stable and enough fast on my old computer:Thanks you very much for the suggestions! Unfortunately DXVK 1.6 did not change anything the slightest. I tried your Lutris script but it failed after downloading the installer from GOG. However when I installed it on my laptop (Ryzen 3500U, identical software setup), I got 40FPS so the game might just dislike my hardware.
Ubuntu 19.10 64 bits - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 - Nvidia drivers 435.21 - 1920x1080 - Processor Intel i5-3570 3,4 Ghz - 16 Go RAM - resolution: 1920x1080 - fps: 60 (limited by my tv)
Spoiler, click me
I saw you are using DXVK 1.5.5, you should try 1.6, there is a performance boost for this game in this more recent version.
I wrote a Lutris script for the GOG edition, you could test it here:

Quote. I tried your Lutris script but it failed after downloading the installer from GOG
GOG recently changed their API and Lutris does no more know how to download automatically GOG setup files.
Workaround: use last git version or disconnect GOG sync in "import games..." menu. Then Lutris will no more automatically download GOG setup file and will ask you instead for a local setup file.
QuoteHowever when I installed it on my laptop (Ryzen 3500U, identical software setup), I got 40FPS so the game might just dislike my hardware.
I think you found the cause.
