Shortest Trip to Earth takes elements of FTL, and then sprinkles in a huge amount more to make it have a lot more depth and quite a lot of challenge to it. Originally released in August last year, the Linux release arrived a few days ago.
The tutorial is definitely recommended to go through on this one. When you first get into the game, it's pretty clear it's needed as they advertise the "brutal" difficulty of it. If you lose all your crew and/or your ship is destroyed, it's game over. However, you can unlock certain perks to help your next run.

I've always wanted something similar in style to FTL but with more freedom to it and after playing a few hours, Shortest Trip to Earth fits quite nicely in that. The initial play-through is quite overloading I will admit, there's a huge amount of variables to take in. A big amount of customization too. You manually install, upgrade and sort all your ship modules and resources and so for players who like micro-management it's certainly going to keep you quite busy. Exciting in a number of ways too. If you love space games full of exploration and action, with plenty of other things to keep you interested it's got a bit of everything.
Feature Highlight:
- Master the art of survival in unexplored space!
- Explore a procedurally generated universe, packed with content
- Collect resources, craft modules & upgrade your ship
- Epic real-time tactical space battles
- Onboard combat, featuring hostile intruders, drones and battle-hardened pets
- 500+ ship modules, a variety of ship weapons and nukes
- 30+ unique crew weapons
- 50+ types of crew, drones & combat pets
- Hundreds of random events with unique illustrations and outcomes
You can pick up Shortest Trip to Earth on Humble Store, GOG and Steam.
Quoting: CyrilLiam, how about the performances/stability of the Linux build? No issues to report, would have listed any in the article.
With help from the developer I was able to work around this issue by switching to Linux Container Runtime Compatibility tool, which automatically started download of Linux version. After the download, I just disabled the Linux Container Runtime and the game works without issue.
I have to say that developer was really helpful and replied quickly on Steam discussions. :-)
