As far as turn-based card battlers go, DragonEvo was quite promising when I tried it out recently and now it looks even better with a big update and a release on itch.io.

"A free-to play online card game with elements of RPG and traditional CCGs. The game is set in the DragonEvo fantasy universe, where you must choose one of the rivaling factions on the continent of Erendor. "

It's gone through something of a big quality of life update recently. With the latest release, the biggest visible change is the new battle board. They've gone from a literal board, with nothing around it to an incredibly vibrant style that actually looks pretty sweet. This is one of the two new boards available:

There's plenty of other smaller but noticeable changes too. Cards that aren't ready, for example, now have a little sleep animation as opposed to just being turned a little on their side. If you've not tried it before, now is a good time too. They overhauled the tutorial as well, to help go over some of the finer differences in how you play DragonEvo.

Features:

  • Turn-based card game with elements of RPG & TCG
  • A deck-building game with almost endless combinations of cards and equipment
  • A rich and story-driven environment based on the original DragonEvo universe
  • Play against players on all platforms, including mobile
  • Various game modes: challenge friends, played ranked, practice or adventure through the single-player

Try out DragonEvo on itch.io. There's an AppImage available to play across various Linux distributions to give you a standalone copy, you no longer have to play it in the browser.

I fancied giving this a go, but you need to register a DragonEvo account before it lets you play and I was just... naw. It's free though, so maybe I'll give it a go eventually.

Disclaimer: I'm one of the devs. I understand what you're saying, and we try to not require too much, but some kind of sign up is necessary. Would it be less intrusive if you could use an existing Google (or similar) login? It would still link it to an entry in our database since we need to recognize/identify users, but we're open for suggestions here.

If you do decide to try it out, I hope you like it :)

I'd be in favor of a Google OAuth or Steam account login option. (Does Itch support OAuth or some similar option? Would totally be in favor of that too, if they do.) Definitely have more than enough accounts at various places these days such that creating a new one somewhere has become increasingly "meh" for me... Totally understand the need for some sorta account authorization/authentication, but always nice when it can be done such that it avoids yet another new login/password entry in my password safe.

Yes. We will keep content available to players free of charge, and at the same time allow for making money through non-essential purchases, such as avatars and deck art. We have some other monetization options planned, but we won't monetize actual gameplay or employ pay-to-play techniques such as other games.

Then I understand what you meant. Thanks for the feedback, we've already increased priority for adding this functionality.
