Total War: SHOGUN 2 is now FREE to grab until May 1st on Steam. This is not a free week or weekend, this is your chance to grab an entirely free copy of the game.

Developed by Creative Assembly and originally released in 2011, game porter Feral Interactive later updated it with a Linux port in 2017 which our contributor Samsai wrote about here. Like the majority of Total War games, it has quite a high rating too. On Steam it's sat with a "Very Positive" user score from nearly twenty thousand people.

As for why it's currently free to keep: on the Total War blog post, the team mentioned this:

The past few weeks have presented unimaginable challenges for many of us, but the remarkable collective effort being made by the global community to overcome this moment of adversity has been truly inspirational.

With this in mind, we want to continue to encourage you all to stay home and save lives by extending a gift to everyone to help make this difficult situation a little bit easier.

Everyone at Creative Assembly is now working from home, and we hope that this will help everyone with that stay home mission – #StayHomeSaveLives.

You can see the original release trailer for the Linux version from Feral Interactive below:

Nope. But I still love this game (in Singleplayer mode) for its flow and its style. I don't regret the 166 h spent on it.

Quick question: does it support Cross-Platform multiplayer?
I have a friend on Windows who would love to play it with me!

I can't find any review on protondb about running it on proton, do you have any experience?

Thank you

The game don't start for me :/ Very strange, because Total War: Warhammer II works just fine. I'm using Manjaro. It just shows steam "window" saying about starting the game, and then turns off and nothing happens. When I tried running the game with Proton, it does the same thing. Any idea why it doesn't start?

Maybe you're using steam-native and your system is missing some library? It's happened to me before with a Feral port and it turned out I was missing gconf. You can also try running Steam via the terminal and after you try to run the game, you can read the printed error messages and find out what the issue is.
