Egosoft continue to polish up their ridiculously massive, incredibly ambitious and rather good looking space sim with the release of X4: Split Vendetta and the massive 3.0 free update.

For everyone in the free update there's new storyline, new mission types, French voice-over, new standalone tutorials, new shops, a configurable alert system, new weapons, improved graphics and a huge amount more. Meanwhile X4: Split Vendetta, the paid DLC, adds in a massive expansion to the universe amongst other things like the two new Split family clans.

Check out their impressive release trailer below:

This is, without a doubt, the biggest update to the game yet and shows how completely committed Egosoft are to creating the best possible space game they can. Their effort is showing too, as X4: Foundations really has come a long way. I've spoken to quite a few people who are regular players of X4, since I only dabble in it here and there myself and they've all said along the same lines that it's a huge improvement.

It is an incredibly impressive game, even with the rough edges here and there. It often looks completely gorgeous too, and the action when you get into a fight is extremely intense during some of the bigger battles. Everything outside of that too with all the exploration, trading and more. It's just massive.

You can grab X4: Foundations and the DLC from Humble Store, GOG and Steam.

I play X4 since Dec 19 and I like it a lot.
It gets better and better. One of the best native Linux games IMHO. I have not bought Vendetta yet. But the base game is great and on sale on Steam ;-)
I will buy Vendetta in the next days.

They have their own engine and are using Vulkan by the way.
Shmerl Apr 2, 2020
It's an expansion with a major version update for the base game, which includes bug fixes and etc.

Some people say that you need to be online and create an account in order to upgrade your ship. Is that still a thing?

I own all the X- games but not this one. Don't trust them anymore, but well, if I see more and more good reviews why not...

You can trust them to not deliver a complete game at launch. You can also trust them to not just give up on it. And if you trust the reviews, they turned away from the Rebirth gameplay.

I suppose this is the time to start over and replay this from the beginning!

Not entirely true, no. AFAIK, upgrading a ship was never tied to on-line status. That is so since version 2.50 (initial release), dunno for the earlier beta-versions.

EgoSoft account and Steam DRM connection were still needed for certain things: obtaining some on-line exclusive paintjobs for ships (purely aesthetic) or unlocking alternative gamestarts (done via checking for certain achievement on Steam). This means GOG users were out of luck with the gamestarts (at least up to 2.60HF2).

Regardless, none of the above prevents meaningful ship upgrades (changing of equipment etc.).
I own all the X- games but not this one.
In other words, you don't own all the X-games.
You can earn every prize through regular missions.
Not true. As I wrote above, some paintjobs are on-line exclusive.

Wow. It's really smooth now. Ship AI seems better too. I wonder if it's good enough for them to turn collision damage back on.

Didn't really want to go for the most expensive ones as I don't know how much I'll actually use it.
But that one reportedly works well on linux, and seems to be "good enough" quality, so I guess I'll be fine.

As a former X player - yes, the one without a number - I am very satisfied with X4 nowadays.

It also runs smooth af and makes use of my precious cores instead of hogging to only one or two. All slidersss max :D

I'd only wish for _more_ ship interior designs I could walk around in just for the fun.

…oh and absolutely use a SSD for that save folders. Saving takes very long.

Good choice, IIRC it uses HALL sensors too, seems to be well recommended my Elite/SC players.

I doubt it. Which ones? What is your source?
The usual stuff:Without mods players are basically limited to 6 paitjobs (besides default one):
ARG: Forty Two
ANT: The Vindicator
HOP: Path to Glory
PAR: Garbage Disposal Unit 3
TEL: Opportunity
SCA: The Scream
And that's it. :'(

I read that X4 support for HOTAS is not that great, unfortunately.
Is that correct?

Well it does have profiles for a few including the warthog, You can set customise buttons fine however, Trying to change axis like rudder ect does not work at all.

No idea as to why.

What axes are you trying to change? Can you describe them in detail? I wil try to reproduce here.

Notice that if you have a HOTAS kit that has more than one device plugged to the computer, you must inform them in the input device configuration. I do that because I use my G29 pedals along with the X52.

Any of the analogue axis that wont bind.

If you go into the settings and delete say throttle then try to rebind it to a different axis it fails.

It works fine as the profile is set as.

The first link you posted does not confirm your position, on the contrary, some of the comments show a player getting a Tier-3 paintjob (and I've also taken those from missions too, although I don't remember which was).
"Path to Glory" is a tier 3 paintjob. Which means absolutely nothing. Its "drop rate" is equal to a tier 1 "Opportunity": just take and finish an appropriate guild mission for the faction in the list. :)
The second link does not have any information regarding the game not having the paintjobs on the missions.
It has. Exactly 1 paintjob per faction (see the list).
And from where did you take this list?
I've made it myself based on my 500+ hours in the game and dozens of completed guild missions (normal missions never have paintjob as reward). Chances there are super rare "once in a blue moon" rewards with some paintjobs other than in the list are minuscule.

Worked fine here. Now, again, did your register all your HOTAS devices in the game? You have to get to settings, "Manage Controllers/Joysticks", then configure the devices you will be using. Like that:

If you don't register your devices there, they won't be detected when assigning the controls. Might be that what's happening.

Yes, That's the first thing I did. I have the GOG version not steam too . Not that should make a difference mind.

I don't have my Steam controler plugged in either.
