Today is May 4th, which means it's also Star Wars day so here's a look at what Star Wars games are possible to play on Linux plus a quick run over the sales to pick up some discounted pew-pew fun.

Like many of you, I enjoy Star Wars and plenty of the games are playable on Linux officially or otherwise. Back in 2015, game porter/publisher Aspyr Media revamped Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords for all platforms and gave it a Linux version too. This re-release came with updated resolution support, Steam Workshop and more and it's good fun. You can pick up Knights of the Old Republic II with Linux support from Humble Store ans Steam with 65% off right now.

For some of the other classics games, DRM-free game store GOG packaged up a few of them officially with DOSBox for Linux to make it easy to play. These include STAR WARS: Dark Forces (65% off), STAR WARS: TIE Fighter Special Edition (66% off), STAR WARS: X-Wing Special Edition (66% off) and Star Wars: Rebel Assault 1 + 2.

But wait! Even more are playable. Jedi Academy (and somewhat Jedi Outcast) have an open source game with with OpenJK which supports both single and multiplayer for Jedi Academy so you can have a lot of fun there. It needs the game assets though so you can grab Jedi Academy on GOG / Steam / Humble and Jedi Outcast on GOG / Steam / Humble with all stores having both about 65/66% off.

There's a ton of other games that don't have Linux builds but thankfully you can play the vast majority with DOSBox, Wine and Steam Play's Proton compatibility layer. This includes the classic and much loved Star Wars: Battlefront 2 on Steam which was one of the first titles on the Steam Play Proton whitelist.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga works, apparently (I started this comment thinking, “I'm sure it must, since Lego Batman does”, then realised I could go and check on the Wine AppDB and ProtonDB. D'oh!). Definitely my favourite Star Wars game. Although, to be fair, I've never played KoTR and the sit-down version of the arcade game runs it a very close second.

I thought this would be a good reason to finally have a look at KOTOR2. Apparently not. It doesn't do anything. Just starts, no window and the process sits there sleeping. No errors, no logs, nothing.

Anybody that can still get this to work?

I played it through a couple of months ago and didn't have any issues. I was never able to finish on my console because one of the kids would walk by and say "ooh, can I play?"...

I wasn't aiming for 100% completion though so I presume there could be issues I never ran into.

Played great with my Steam Controller.

Apparently it wasn't just KOTOR2. Nothing started. Reboot fixed everything. Not sure what was up there.

Believe it or not, even the new Star Wars: Battlefront (the EA one) works on Linux. I tested it with the current Lutris Origin install script, and played the coop missions with my little son. You just have to disable the Origin overlay, you can create the party from within the game and accepts invites there, so the overlay is not needed.
Even online sessions are possible, but I haven tested them much.

Maybe even the new Star Wars: Battlefront 2 works, as it doesn't have easy anti-cheat. Well, as it's still EA, so they might ban you anyways just because you use wine.

Empire at War also works with Proton, last I checked, and it is a good game.

I played halfway through that in Wine back before Steam supported Linux and really enjoyed what I played. Still hoping to have time to dive back into it someday \o/

If anybody's keen to see where these Linux-friendly games lie within the greater chronology of Star Wars games, I've got you covered :D

Don't know if any one else have stumpled unpon the same problem and perhaps a solution but KOTOR2 for me drops all sound effects at random points, sometimes after 30minutes, sometimes after 5minutes...

In case any future reader experienced the same problems with KOTOR2 I managed to find out that this happens due to the game being not fully compatible with the version of libopenal that where introduced in Ubuntu 18.04 (or perhaps even as early as 16.04) and that it needs the one from 14.04.

So I downloaded the 14.04 deb for i386 from http://launchpadlibrarian.net/108030537/libopenal1_1.14-4ubuntu1_i386.deb , extracted the libopenal.so.1.14.0 from the archive, moved it to /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu and recreated the link libopenal.so.1 there to point to this older library and after that the sound no longer disappears.

Perhaps better to move it to the local game directory and play around with LD_PRELOAD but I found it easier to just go the system wide approach and perhaps there are other old 32-bit games that have other problems with this new version ov openal anyway.
