Remember SkyRoads? A classic 90's racing game with a bit of a twist, that acts a bit like a platformer. It has a free clone called Tasty Static, which recently had a big update. I've been a little obsessed over it too.

Such a simple idea taken from a classic and yet, it's so good at the same time. Initially it feels like all you're doing is sliding around and mashing the spacebar to jump with some awesome beats playing. However, it gets seriously intense and it really pulls you in.

You need to quickly learn to manage acceleration, plus get the timing of your jumps and sliding correctly. Together, it's all thoroughly challenging and entertaining. Thankfully the early levels ease you in nicely. Overall though for a free clone of an old classic it's excellent and works very well.

What's actually new in Tasty Static 1.1? Released back in March: it's now 64bit, it's been upgraded with SDL 2, it no longer needs Audiere and instead uses SDL_mixer, there's a few minor bug fixes and the player save file and custom road location was moved to a " system-dependent safe place to store game preferences, rather than right in the executable directory". It's mostly a cleaning up and modernizing release to ensure it continues working for years to come.

You can download Tasty Static free here.
