Pine sure is pretty and as an open-world adventure, it did the job quite nicely at giving you plenty to explore with some tough combat and now it should be smoother.

Pine is an open world action adventure simulation game. Set in the beautiful world of Albamare, you take on the role of Hue, a smart young adult who will have to explore, trade, and fight his way through a vibrant world filled with creatures much smarter than humans.

The developer, Twirlbound, mentioned that they went back and overhauled some of the more annoying parts of the game based on a lot of player feedback. After checking it out, it all sounds pretty ideal. Some of what's new and improved includes:

  • Performance gains and big stutter reductions from garbage collection through upgrading Pine’s engine and implementing incremental garbage collection
  • Combat is smoother and much more responsive: added dodge cancel, kick out of any move and fractional directional control
  • Camera tweaks: added auto steering settings and removed aimed smoothing
  • Platforming is more forgiving due to the addition of ‘coyote time’
  • Two new languages added (Dutch and Korean), two more coming soon

Camera changes are extremely welcome, as the auto-steering and smoothing ended up causing more issues than they actually helped with, at least for me anyway but it appears many others felt the same. Coyote time for platforming is a nice accessibility feature too, giving you extra frames to jump after leaving a platform. There's also quite a number of bug fixes and overall it sounds like a really sweet update.

Initially, this big update suffered major graphical issues on Linux which the developer said was a "problem with our builder and it went unnoticed" but they put up a fix shortly after. Nice to see prompt support and hopefully it won't happen again.

You can pick up Pine from GOG and Steam.

I left the game in the last mission, as I had not developed my tribes enough and they were always beating me to death. Loved the game though.

I'm feeling a little bump of excitement at this news because I was looking forward to Pine's initial release, only to be disappointed by what I was reading in the initial reviews. I'd like to think that something as pretty as Pine plays as slick as it looks. I'm going to have to keep an eye on it and see what reviews have to say about the latest changes.

I bought the game shortly after release with every intention to play it during my christmas/new years holiday. Never actually go to it.

I ended up refunding this game, as the performance was pretty bad.

Nice, I bought the game just after release and enjoyed it, despite a few annoying bugs (had to search for a walkthrough after getting a key object, but the pop-up explaining how it works did not show, and I was stuck... :/)

I was looking for an excuse to try another run, this update seems like a good occasion

Played the game before, it is nice but not something which would attract me much. It is not fast paced, but not meditative either, which makes me feel uneasy playing it. Can't say there was anything broken with it regarding gameplay. Hope the change did not make it worse.

I tried launching the game, and indeed, something is wrong with the perfs... I only got ~15fps at the beginning, when it was more around 60-80 last time I played...

I'll stick with Breath of the Wild.
