The Mesa open source Linux driver team have put up their updated roadmap for the upcoming version 20.2 version.

Much like official NVIDIA Linux drivers, Mesa has quite a regular release cycle to power your AMD and Intel chips (plus older NVIDIA) with OpenGL / Vulkan and over the past few years the quality has really come along nicely. Once one release ships, with people working on all sorts of features and improvements, the next release is open for development and code merging.

Mesa 20.2 is the upcoming release, which pulls in new hardware support as usual. Here's their new release calendar:

  • 20.2.0-rc1 - due 2020-08-05
  • 20.2.0-rc2 - due 2020-08-12
  • 20.2.0-rc3 - due 2020-08-19
  • 20.2.0-rc4 - due 2020-08-26 - this may become the final release.

Additionally, the Mesa 20.1.x series is coming along with bug fixes to the last major update with multiple planned point release from now up until 20.1.8 due September 16 which will be the last update in that series.

Also, finally, it seems the Mesa3D website got a makeover. It did look very…early internet before but now it's quite a bit flashier. A quick check back on the Internet Archive shows it was put live earlier this month. The new documentation is a big improvement too.

There is some interesting project history overview there. Good thing AMD and Intel got behind Mesa even for their official drivers. Only Nvidia and mobile GPU makers are outliers today.

Mesa 20.2 will bring support for Intel DG-1. Hopefully a new dGPU contender may born for PC.
