After a successful crowdfunding campaign several years ago, the slick and violent Hellpoint has now released with same-day Linux support.

This is one I’ve been keeping an eye on ever since its initial crowdfunding campaign and early demo. Hellpoint merges science fiction with the occult, putting the player at odds with the crazed and with inter-dimensional entities that seem to be hostile to normal life. While there seem to be clear influences from games such as Dark Souls, Hellpoint appears to leverage its sci fi elements to its advantage, providing a rather distinct look from other games in its class.

As seems all too regular when humanity sticks its nose where it doesn’t belong, the game is set in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event know as the Merge. Stuck on a space station named Irid Novo, the game promises certain dynamism depending on the station’s orbit around a black hole as well as the player’s choices throughout the game. It’s hard to say just how much freedom the game will provide but I can say that, given the demos and trailers we’ve seen so far, there’s a lot of carnage to expect no matter what.

It’s nice that the game will also launch with both local and online coop which is definitely a strong plus for me. I’m not particularly skilled at these sorts of games so playing with a buddy sounds like a good way of having fun. Our own Liam has been given a key and will sharing his thoughts as soon as he has spent enough time dying constantly slaughtering his way through the mysterious space station. Although the game has seen bug reports flowing in so it may be a while.

You can pick up Hellpoint on GOG or Steam.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

Looks pretty neat. Does anyone know whether it is using Vulkan or OpenGl?

Vulkan, at least from the GOG version, not tested the Steam build.

Installing now... oh yes :-)

The reviews on steam thus far are not good... Sounds really buggy (and those are probably Windows players - we probably have extra)... I think I'll wait to see if things improve.

Pre-release gameplay videos looked kind of boring, to be honest. All enemies were basically one-hit kills: No combo geographies you could pull off like in Shadows of Mordor or the Batman games - just button-mashing.

Haven't played yet, but there's already an update. :o

I'm trying to run the GOG version on EndeavourOS and I get:
Running Hellpoint
Set current directory to /home/daikaiser93/Storage/GOG/Hellpoint/game
Found path: /home/daikaiser93/Storage/GOG/Hellpoint/game/Hellpoint.x86_64
./start.sh: line 16: 117614 Aborted (core dumped) ./"Hellpoint.x86_64"

Anyone know what it could be?

I've been trying to run the Pre-Alpha demo and I get a similar error. I've attempted a few fixes but nothing so far.

For a better idea of why it's not running, open up ".config/unity3d/Cradle Games/Hellpoint/Player.log". It's probably a library issue somewhere.

LOL, forgot that EndeavourOS doesn't come with a lot installed so I forgot to install Vulkan, the game's running now.

Just installed and played the Demo on Steam. Runs great. Can the demos' co-op be tested?

Can confirm Steam version uses Vulkan (at least I assume 'creating vulkan shaders' is an indicator that it does). About to start playing!

I got a bunch of glitches from light sources on it, seemed to be better when I maxed out some things and changed AA, but not sure exactly which setting it was yet, figured I'd try in Arch with latest drivers... and then I got sidetracked purchasing a ThinkVision P44w-10....

I'll have to watch a bit of live gameplay to get a better idea of this game.

I have turned off Bloom and the light source problem seems to be fixed for now.

Can't play for long with keyboard and mouse because the camera can only move ~720 degrees before it stops going in that direction.

Had good fun playing with a Steam controller though, doesn't seem to have the same issues.

Much like the Dark Souls games this is clearly modeled after. It seems to be made to be played with a gamepad.

Picked up the GOG version. The offline installer is behind and not working properly. Someone already posted about it on the GOG forums. If it's not patched by Friday, I'm afraid I will have to ask for refund. Demo was fun but day 1 launch issues is something I'm just not OK with.

The Steam version has been updated several times since release and the devs seem fairly responsive in the Steam forums, though the Dark Souls kidz whining about how Hellpoint isn't Dark Souls do lower the quality of discussion. Might be worth replacing your GOG version with the Steam version. You can even make it DRM-free by dropping the Goldberg emulator in there!

I just request a refund from GOG. The recent update they added did not help. Hopefully, the Steam version is a better fit for me.

Ha, how is it not Dark Souls? The only thing I've even noticed different in the gameplay is sometimes the 'souls' that drop are dropped as little cubes, which you keep if you die. Other than that, the gameplay and even the level design seems very similar.
