Destination Sol might not be a name known to all but it's a sweet little space exploration RPG that's free and open source, plus it's getting big updates.

The 2.0 release of Destination Sol was released on July 5, bringing with it much easier and expanded modding support. So easy in fact, you should be able to download extra Modules and drop them into the Modules folder to have them work. This release also adds in more ships, more guns and more of everything else.

On top of extra content there's also tons of bug fixes, code cleaning work done to keep the project healthy, a new logo and animated menu background, UI improvements, the ability to mark waypoints on the map, you can now pan the map around with mouse input, and the Factions system was expanded to allow you to gain and lose reputation with them through different actions.

Great to see another free and open source game doing well and expanding.

You can play it free on Steam or grab it for the very latest release from GitHub.

Wow - last time I tried this game, it was empty and dull. But... haha! I've just checked - that was 2015! So, yeah, I guess five more years of development will change a game!?

I'll give this another go, for sure. Another competitor for Drox Operative 2, it seems. And it's free!

Naev is a very similar game that I enjoyed a lot in the past. Also free, open source and available in steam. A new version was released just one month ago after some inactivity.
