Another wonderful classic free and open source game had a fresh update recently. This time it's Naev, a game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity.

Naev is an open-world space trading and combat game, giving you the freedom to explore space and do pretty much anything you want. The first Beta of Naev 0.8.0 is out now, which is the first major release in around three years so naturally it includes a lot of changes.

Highlights of Naev 0.8.0:

  • Simple economy model implemented
  • Missiles and fighter bays reload while in space
  • Added asteroids and mining
  • Improved player GUI + Brushed GUI is now the default
  • Improved and fixed escort system
  • New and/or improved missions
  • Autonav can now follow ships
  • Shaders to 'speed up and improve graphics'
  • Translation support

Wonderful to see another free and open source game continue to expand. It already has quite a lot of content but it's still far for being a finished game which they make clear on the Steam page. There's no expected time for them to finish it either, as is the case with a lot of open source games it's a hobby project for the people who work on it. Since it's open source though, anyone can help.

Is it just me or does it feel like a bunch of older open source games are being revitalized lately?

I’d love UFO:AI to bloom again. Years ago i played a beta of version 26 something (i’m pretty sure it end with "6"...), and it was still almost the same beta a few weeks ago when i checked.

Naev main menu says v7, not v8, and there is no "beta tab" on Steam. Did i miss something ?

Seems that to me too. I hope UFO: Alien Invasion benefits from that too (...)

Instantly though the exact same thing.

The beta isn't on Steam. From my understanding it's because bobbens (the head of the project) doesn't want to deal with the hassle uploading pre-releases to Steam and wants to instead wait for the 0.8 release proper to do that. The beta can be found under the GH releases page:

https://github.com/naev/naev/releases/tag/naev-0.8.0-beta1

Though in truth I would recommend the latest from Git over the beta if you can manage, mostly because I ended up fixing a lot of bugs and adding tons of stuff to it right after the beta came out last month, so the beta is woefully out of date at this point (missing a whole lot of stuff that the 0.8 release proper is going to end up having). Of course I speak as a contributor, so it's easier for me to say since I'm always doing that anyway.
