Vintage Story, the wilderness survival sandbox inspired by lovecraftian horror themes with some impressive depth to it has a huge new stable release up.

A survival game that just continues to impress me. Slow and difficult to get into but very rewarding once you learn the mechanics which have a surprising amount of depth. That depth gets deeper with the Seasons Update, which I don't think I need to explain too much with the big highlight being a full season system which includes: snow accumulation, there's season-specific foliage and temperature dependent plant growth.

Not only seasons though, graphically it got another bump. There's now SSAO (screen space ambient occlusion), specular sunlight reflections on water surfaces and more foamy water. Also added: persistent world map, lots of new flora for hot and wet climates like Fern trees, crotons and rafflesias, in-game help improvements and tons more. Have a look at the new trailer:

Not only did they focus on some massive feature additions, they also detailed a bunch of performance improvements that made it into this release so you might find it running a bit smoother in places.

In a previous article here, a user mentioned that they thought it had "constant-online DRM" but the developer cleared up that misconception in a comment to mention that it does a single authorisation check when starting up. You can even block it after the first time and it will keep on working. So DRM-free it's technically not but it's reasonably sane.

You can buy it from Humble Store, itch.io and the official site.

Welp, I promised I bring my server up after the update, so stay tuned. Let's test if my hardware could take it..

Thanks for clearing up the drm situation. If it's just a one time check, I may have a look at it. Because I obviously need more games to play.

Very interested in Vintage Story. I've watched a couple of game play videos and it seems a very well designed survival, crafting sandbox game. I have a few questions about it:

What is the install size? (It isn't clear how big the files are on itch.io if you don't own the game.)

Currently it is available on itch.io - If I were to buy it "now" would I be eligible for a Steam key when the game is further into its development? (That happened with Dicey Dungeons, and I got a steam key later on, from their itch page.)

g000h: The extracted archive is 347 megs (rc3).

I will express my love for this game again. I barely play anything else anymore haha. If you guys want to get started playing online, I'm on the official test server (chrometech.at), contact me there and I'll help you find a nice spot to settle in.

I don't think it'll be available on Steam? I bought it through their website.

Size: About 350MB uncompressed, 286MB compressed. It's tiny, comparatively speaking.

I'm having fun with it, although it's much less forgiving than minecrat. You can mitigate death penalties, which I'd recommend until you get the hang of mechanics. (Every mechanic has an option to tweak, I think.)

This is a link to their forum with distros that it runs on and any issues or hacks reported for the distro. https://www.vintagestory.at/forums/topic/520-linux-distrosconfigurations-under-which-vs-is-known-to-run/

I wish they supported Steam then I could choose to use either the Proton Windows OS compat layer or the SLR Ubuntu OS container. It would make things so much easier. I want to like Itch but it's such a pain in the badunkdunk, and a lot of the "Linux" games I've tried from that charity bundle didn't run out of the box.

You can add it as non-Steam game after which the container or proton can be used just as easily.

I am tuned! OK, if you get a usable server running, please share creds! I was thinking of starting up a server and sharing the creds in a forum post here and hosting it as an event. That way, we can hopefully get a handful of people to start and play at the same time! Longevity of the server would depend on interest. The gist is I wouldn't set out to start a new club or something and try to get regulars. They just fall apart. But it would be fun to have like a game party.

I think the only dependency I had to install was mono.

Thanks for the info. Installing Mono seems reasonable. I'll keep it on my radar. It does look interesting.
