Released just before the weekend began, the Wine team have put out the 5.16 development release as they continue chasing Windows compatibility.
Need to know what Wine is? It's the constantly improving compatibility layer that allows the running of Windows-only applications and games on Linux and other operating systems. It's one of the driving forces behind Steam Play Proton. Helping you to get whatever you need done on Linux, or perhaps so you don't have to give up that favourite game.
Release highlights include:
- Support for x86 AVX registers.
- Some ARM64 fixes for macOS.
- Still more restructuration of the console support.
With a small set of reported bugs being marked as solved too. Some being older bugs that were found to be working now which includes: Quake Champions, ABZU, Still Life, Armored Warfare and others.
See the full release announcement here.
If you want help managing different installs of Wine, you can try Lutris.
Updated list of mfplat related games:
Darksiders 3 (UE4) - WORKING
Shadow Warrior 2 (Custom Engine) - BROKEN
Outward (Unity) - WORKING
Shadows: Awakening (Unity) - WORKING
Darksiders 1 (Custom Engine) -
EDIT: Darksiders 1 fails to launch entirely when the mfplat patches are applied, works fine with a vanilla Wine build. Also tried a new build with the mfplat patches from github commit f6495b2 but to no avail.

Does anyone know when a new version of Proton will be available?Nope, there's no public roadmap and Valve don't usually share future info.
Shadow Warrior 2 (Custom Engine) - BROKEN
Did this not get a Linux release? REAL shame to see that not work. Maybe it will work for me tho.
See more from me
