Kalypso Media sent word that the upcoming space management sim Spacebase Startopia has been delayed, with no exact date now being given.

Originally due to launch for Linux, macOS and Windows on October 23 they're now only giving a release window of sometime in the Spring of 2021 for all platforms. That's a pretty big delay, with their email noting it will "allow for more development time to further polish the game, ensuring that it reaches the highest quality level possible and meets the high expectations of fans and beta testers" and also it ensures "that the game can launch in more territories and on more platforms from day one".

Delays are always a shame for players excited to jump in but it must clearly be needed.

In Spacebase Startopia, players will carve out their own little space in the universe, ready to become a galactic utopia – if your management skills are up to the task. With three different game modes and a vast amount of management decisions to be made under the watchful eye of the VAL, the station’s sardonic AI, there’s plenty of in-depth gameplay waiting for new and seasoned players alike. But beware of invading space pirates, who will do their best to ruin your carefully laid plans!

What they have planned:

  • Singleplayer campaign with 10 fully voiced single player missions
  • Individually configurable sandbox mode
  • Competitive and a cooperative multiplayer for up to 4 players
  • Build 30+ rooms across three very different decks to offer everything that the visiting aliens could wish for
  • Manage a melting pot of different alien races, each with their own individual – and sometimes contradictory - needs and desires
  • Produce and trade resources to turn a profit, while running sabotage missions against your competitors

The good news is that their email was very clear that Linux support will be available at release.

You can pre-order if that's your thing from Humble Store and Steam.

I'm looking forward to this one. I spent plenty of hours in the original.
I'm always for delaying if it means the game will be more polished and bug hunting will be properly done.

The first release of startopia was realy bugy.
I remember being a lucky guy with my hardware to be able to play the 1.0 version without too much issues ( still had to reinstall the game and drivers a few times ). Then the patches made things better.
I still install it from my original disc and play the campaign again ! The french voice is really something and convey the humor perfectly !
Too bad there won't be translation and voice over again... But I don't mind that much :) I'm bilingual now playing with so much english titles.

"Allow for more development time to further polish the game, ensuring that it [...] meets the high expectations of fans and beta testers". Sounds like the testers weren't too happy (and sounds a little bit like they'd want to say it's the testers' fault).

Happy to wait for a better quality game. I think a lot of games enter EA too early then struggle to recover from the negative reviews.

I watched one or two live streams when it was either EA or a beta the other week. It seemed pretty good to me, but the streamer did question whether a lot of little things were bugs or not, making me think he must have run across a few certain ones and then became suspicious. You wouldn't want to be in that mindset when playing a game you just purchased. When being a beta tester, sure. So, yeah, my guess is the same as yours -- that the beta/EA feedback revealed more work areas than they forecast.

I must say, though, that watching the game got me quite interested in it! I think I would enjoy it and am likely to buy it when it's "finished."
