Continuing to chase Windows as a platform, the compatibility layer Wine has another development release available now with Wine 5.19.

Need to know what Wine is? Here's a quick primer: it's a constantly improving compatibility layer that allows the running of Windows-only applications and games on Linux and other operating systems. It's one of the driving forces behind Steam Play Proton. Helping you to get whatever you need done on Linux, or perhaps so you don't have to give up that favourite game.

Update highlights for Wine 5.19 include:

  • Wine Mono engine updated to 5.1.1, with WPF text formatting support.
  • KERNEL32 library converted to PE.
  • DSS cryptographic provider.
  • Windowing support in the new console host.
  • A number of exception handling fixes.

The team also noted 27 bugs were fixed. Our usual disclaimer here applies: some are old bugs solved in earlier releases, some only recently. These include: Mahjong Titans, Resident Evil HD Remaster, Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster, Silent Hill 4, winetricks leaving lots of processes open, World of Warcraft, Fallout: New Vegas and a few more.

Find the full release notes here.

If you need help running multiple Wine versions, Lutris is good for that. You can also get help in our Forum any time.

I can play again anno1404:venice and anno 2070 ! Years without playing them...
Need to check about X3:Terran conflict...
There still are games i'd like to see running... Mainly chinese and japanese games.
But i'd say 90% of my games are playable and that's fine ! Still have lots of games to finish !

Does X3:TC native not work any more?

Last I tried I got tons of error in the console and there was no real solution. Then X4 got released and it went X4.
But I still need to finish X3:TC ( after 800hours ).
I'll try again when I have time.

Yes, it's indeed worrying a bit. Can't actually say anything useful on topic, but thanks for pointing this out.
