After a new AMD Ryzen powered Linux laptop for work and some gaming too? Germany company TUXEDO are back with another announcement with the Aura 15. Using the latest generation AMD Ryzen 7 4700U you get access to 8 fantastic cores of power.

TUXEDO have announced quite a lot over the last year, as they continue expanding like the Polaris 15 / 17 and the absolute monster with the TUXEDO Book XUX7. This Aura 15 is however a much cheaper offering than a lot of their other choices this year while still providing a good bit of power for a range of needs.

Specifications:

Processor AMD Ryzen 7 4700U (8x 2.0-4.1GHz Eight-Core, 8 Threads, 12 MB Cache, 15 W TDP)
Screen 180° hinged 15.6 inch IPS 1080p screen with 95 % sRGB colour space coverage
RAM 8 GB (1x 8GB) 2666MHz CL19 Samsung
up to 64 GB (2x 32GB) 3200MHz CL22 Samsung
Storage 250 GB Kingston (NVMe PCIe)
Up to 2 TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus (NVMe PCIe)
Graphics AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 Graphics
Operating System TUXEDO_OS 20.04 (based on Ubuntu)
Ubuntu 20.04
OpenSUSE 15.2 / 15.1

They also mentioned it will be useful for hooking up with other monitors thanks to the inclusion of a USB C 3.2 Gen2 port which supports DisplayPort 1.4. That port also has charging abilities too, so you can charge it up with a 20V/3.25A USB-C power supply. Other ports include a single USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI 2.0, a standard Gigabit ethernet port and there's also a card reader and sim card slot for LTE. Quite a fully-featured notebook!

It comes with a built-in 49 Wh battery, which should give you "up to 9 hours" when tested with 1080p video streaming and around "15 hours when idle". There's also support for the 'Flexicharger' feature to hopefully provide longer-life for your battery.

Pricing starts at €799, with shipping expected in early November. See more here.

Not a bad price, even with bumping up the specs to 32GB of ram and a 1TB nvme drive. 1000 euros, or about $1171 US.

Hmm… Regarding Linux notebooks, I've found a relevant video recently.

In short, hi-end machines are nice, but they won't reach "General Audience", and affordable mass-market systems is what we are lacking at this time.

Well then, if I hadn't gotten one of their InfinityBook Pro's recently (almost two years ago now), I'd definitely be jumping at this. The specs - and the usual build quality I've seen from TUXEDO - are really good compared to cost after all.

My only possible complaint is the fact that there's still no AMD + TB3 systems readily available, but that's more on Intel than on manufacturers. Hopefully USB4 will fix that soon.

But not out of the ordinary either.

I bought a Lenovo X13 for 1000 Euros 2 months ago: 500GB Samsung NVMe SSD, 16GB/3200 RAM, 4750U Pro, no OS. With this RAM/SSD configuration the Tuxedo comes in at 920 Euros. With the Lenovo you get a 3 year on-site support. And a trackpoint. And 4 USB 3 ports (2 type C, 2 type A). And an excellent keyboard...

Ummmh.

Tuxedo doesn't have any Radeon discrete graphics option for laptops.
Only nVidia.

Deal breaker for me.

Does anyone have a discrete AMD grapics option for laptops right now? (that's not super outdated tech)

Today, the only laptop I know of is the MSI alpha, with Radeon RX 5500M.

AMD also has 5600M and 5700M, but I haven't seen any solution with any of those yet.

A pity.

If you want a laptop that works the most with the Linux graphic stack, you need a Radeon.

That's the one that works with Wayland, X-Wayland and PRIME without problems and with all the features.

Why such the slow memory ?

I don't see an option to get anything with a reasonable latency/speed

I literally don't care (much) about anything other than the FlexiCharger feature. That's what all mobile devices should have. Finally!
