Prodeus is the seriously slick looking retro-shooter re-imagined blending modern and retro designs together. It enters Early Access today but we have a wait ahead for official support. Originally funded on Kickstarter, close to 3,000 backers helped the developers with around $105,626 back in 2019 and it's looking exciting.

On Twitter, the developers confirmed from the official account that Linux and macOS are coming but not just yet:

Mac and Linux builds will not be available on EA release date. We will continue working on them and keep you updated once they are ready.

Features:

  • Fast paced action with hellish destruction
  • Dynamic Soundtrack
  • Visceral and engaging combat scenarios
  • Heavy duty weaponry
  • A multitude of secrets to discover

The good news for now, is that early testers mentioned it currently works with Steam Play Proton with the usual caveats that it might not through each update and it's not supported by the developer. We shall keep you updated on the Linux release date, and Humble Games have already provided us with a key so it shall appear on our Twitch livestreams sometime soon after Linux support is hooked up.

You'll be able to follow along with Humble Store, GOG and Steam.

As Prodeus offered to actively invite users for playtesting (through the new Steam feature ), I was able to have a look at it already. Worked great with Proton, so I guess the early access version will as well. Which offers the ability for interested gamers to jump in at this phase already.

And gosh does this game feel good :D Fast paced, direct controls, lots of gore, and so nicely colorful. I'm a bit sad, that I missed the kickstarter campaign by only one (or was it two?) days.

Yeah, pretty disappointing that the penguins are missing the hype train. Same old same.old.

At 25€ here in Italy, seems a bit pricey for an Early Access game, in all honesty

Works brilliantly with Proton. Funny story, I got alpha access and actually didn't know it was a Windows only build because it worked so well.

Same story for me. I also got into the alpha and totally forgot it was a Windows only game until someone mentioned it on Discord.

Man, Proton is just awesome. So many games these days just works.

This is a very fun game btw, I can highly recommend it.

I thought the alpha release was a bit 'meh', but somehow the gameplay in this new early access release so satifying!

Quoting: GuestAlso, I'd rather this game on gog. Personal choice again.
The GOG version also works with Proton:
[user@linux Proton 5.0]$ mkdir ~/.proton
[user@linux Proton 5.0]$ STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=$HOME/.proton ./proton run ~/Downloads/setup_prodeus_0.0.7_\(42577\).exe
[user@linux Proton 5.0]$ STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=$HOME/.proton ./proton run ~/.proton/pfx/drive_c/GOG\ Games/Prodeus/Prodeus.exe

My preference is also a game that runs natively on GNU/Linux.
As for GOG, DRM-free is better of course.
However, unlike the Steam launcher, I seem to have some trouble launching GOG Galaxy 2.0 in a supported way. ;)
That people are so hooked on Lutris makes me a little sad.

I supported Prodeus on Kickstarter because of GNU/Linux support. Okay, they did not meet their target for Early Access. But I only feel "had" when the devs release the full version sooner than its GNU/Linux support. At that moment I really feel I paid for something I did not order.
