Get your wallets ready and your votes as two big events are happening and live now on Steam with both the Steam Autumn Sale and the 2020 Steam Award Nominations.

Firstly, let's talk about the Steam Awards. This is the fifth annual event, where users all across Steam can vote for their favourite games across different categories. The final voting will take place in December, with nominations running until December 1 at 5PM UTC.

The categories for this year are:

  • Game of the Year
  • VR Game Of The Year
  • Labour Of Love
  • Better With Friends
  • Outstanding Visual Style
  • Most Innovative Gameplay
  • Best Game You Suck At
  • Best Soundtrack
  • Outstanding Story-rich Game
  • Sit Back And Relax

The only category that doesn't have a release date for games attached is the Labor of Love, all others need to have been released after the 2019 Autumn Sale. You can go ahead and nominate titles over here. Oh and yes, it does include a nice Steam Profile Badge too.

Valve say the winners will be announced on January 3 at 6PM UTC.

As for the Steam Autumn Sale, you know the drill by now. Thousands of games just got super cheap, so be sure to look through your Steam Wishlist to see if you can pick something up you've been waiting on. As for some suggestions, here's a few semi-recent releases going cheap you can't miss out on:

Want more? Here's another 10 fantastic experiences from various genres we can easily recommend with big discounts:

Do let fellow GOL readers know in the comments what you think is absolutely unmissable with a good discount.

Valve also expanded their Points Shop with a bunch of Autumn Sale themed items. If you love customizing your profile there's some nice animated background artwork and avatar frames.

The whole sale runs through until December 1 at 6PM UTC.

  • It's getting mixed reviews, but I really like the look of A Long Way Down. It's giving off CardHunter meets Slay the Spire vibes. Only 25% off, but for a tenner, I think it might be worth the risk.

  • It’s very quickly boring and repetitive, lacks depth, and replayability is not great.
Fun a couple hours, then gets old fast.

I'm really interested in some offers from my wish list but not sure if I should wait for Winter sales instead, I think they're usually better...

Quoting: GuestNot linux native games but you can get the Quantic Dreams bundle for 38.99 . Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Detroit Become Human. The first two are great.. haven't played Detroit yet.
I have Detroit on the PS4, interesting game, but wasn't as cool as Until Dawn, which I beat. I should get back to Detroit and win it.
Didn't their first game, Fahrenheit come out for Linux?
    Edit: It did! https://www.mobygames.com/game/fahrenheit-indigo-prophecy-remastered

Don't forget to nominate games for the Steam Awards, especially if they had a good Linux version! . A good opportunity to give some exposure to games that may have been overlooked,

Personally though I have not actually played that many games this year that apply to be nominated. Currently, I have picked the following:

LABOR OF LOVE AWARD: UnReal World
OUTSTANDING VISUAL STYLE AWARD: Art of rally
    MOST INNOVATIVE GAMEPLAY AWARD: Carrion
BEST GAME YOU SUCK AT AWARD: DRAG
BEST SOUNDTRACK AWARD: Streets of Rage 4

Still thinking about the other categories

I think one of the notable Linux deals worth mentioning is Starbound which is currently at its lowest ever discount, 50% off.

I also spotted Pine at 60% discount, which is another lowest ever. Mars Power Industries Deluxe is close to lowest ever discount, 45%.

There are some Proton choices which are good deals, but not planning to give them free advertising here. There are a number of Linux deals which I'm resisting the urge to buy, because the deal isn't good enough (for me).

7 Days To Die was my Labo(u)r of Love choice in the 2020 Nominations.

Nitpicking here, their first game was Omikron, also known as The Nomad Soul, around the turn of the millennium; notably featuring David Bowie in a concert appearance.
That was a bit of a big thing back then, motion capturing was still hot and new, like In Extremo's performance in the first part of the Gothic series which must have been about the same time.
I have to admit I haven't played any of their later titles; The Nomad Soul was such a special experience that I couldn't see myself playing anything even remotely similar. Very much the opposite happened with Gothic, where I had to play every part start-to-finish, and re-play it again shortly before the next instalment came out... good times.

Oh, I have that game! Bought it at some point, I think on GOG? Friend of mine bought it back in the day, but he couldn't get it to work right or couldn't figure it out. I actually meant earlier game like those... but interesting they also made Omikron.

Both Metro redux games are on sale for 3.99 each. I think I might pick them up along with Prey.

For some reason I'm really in the mood for some sci-fi shooters (I'm not normally a FPS person), but for less than the cost of a lunch meal, it's worth a gamble
