Wine project leader Alexandre Julliard announced that the Wine 5.22 development release is now officially available.
Continuing to chase the dream of closer compatibility with Windows games and applications, here's the highlights of the Wine 5.22 release:
- C runtime libraries converted to PE.
- Use fontconfig cache for faster startup.
- Video playback improvements.
- 3DES cipher support.
The Wine 5.22 release also brings with it a note about 36 bug fixes which include fixes for: Guild Wars 2 Launcher, Elite Dangerous Launcher, Fallout New Vegas, Wargaming.net Game Center, Ghostrunner, Overwatch and more.
You can see the release announcement here.
Need to know what Wine is? Here's a quick primer: it's a constantly improving compatibility layer that allows the running of Windows-only applications and games on Linux and other operating systems. It's one of the driving forces behind Steam Play Proton. Helping you to get whatever you need done on Linux, or perhaps so you don't have to give up that favourite game.
Video playback fixes
I skipped the mfplat report on 5.21, but looks like I'll have a busy day testing tomorrow. I've got a few new additions to the list too.
Also it might be a good time to test some old games with video issues.
Also nice to see the fontconfig changes. Not sure how noticeable these particular changes are, but startup time is an issue.
Have CP2077 in Linux on the same release day with the new version of Proton. It would be incredible.Nobody buying it, on any platform, so that it's a complete flop, would be a better outcome.

What is your problem with CP2077? if i may ask...
What is your problem with CP2077? if i may ask...I've got no opinion on the game. It might be great, it might be terrible: we'll see when they stop crunching their devs and release it.
CDPR, though, are Linux-hostile, and used the CP2077 Twitter account to mock people for wanting a Linux Galaxy client.

That thread, yeah; there's more than the one tweet.
Anyway, sorry for the derail.
Currently the widl patchset for windows runtimes is disabled, so users who are playing Microsoft Flight Sim might want to hold off on this release.
See more from me
