Valve puts up Proton 5.13-4 to get Cyberpunk 2077 working on Linux for AMD GPUs

Two bits of major news to cover for the Steam Play Proton compatibility layer, with some exciting major changes coming in with updates. Don't know what Steam Play Proton is? Go take a look at our dedicated page.

Firstly, if you have an AMD GPU and you don't mind grabbing the latest development code for the Mesa graphics drivers - Cyberpunk 2077 should actually work on Linux with the new Proton 5.13-4 release. Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais mentioned that CD PROJEKT RED allowed them some early testing time to get the work done for both vkd3d (the Direct3D 12 to Vulkan layer) and radv (the AMD Mesa Vulkan driver). As an NVIDIA GPU owner, this makes me quite jealous as it seems my only other current choice on Linux is Stadia or GeForce NOW (unofficially - until later in 2021).

Additionally, there's now also a new Proton Experimental branch available which has the start of major architectural changes to Wine. This brings with it a plan to reduce CPU overhead and improve performance in scenarios related to input and windowing. Seems Proton Experimental is an additional version of Proton, so you would install it along side the other versions currently available for this compatibility tool.

You can find the Proton changelog here.

great news, but i ordered it on stadia, since finally it started in my country, i wanted to test it anyway and because they make a nice gift, if you buy Cyberpunk, you will get the Stadia Premiere Edition for free, so the game is free :). If the game is really that good then i will buy it later when all bugs are fixed and all dlc are released on Gog :).

Hmm why not buying on Steam? I mean, who made it possible to play it on Linux?

They tell you: They're getting a free controller + chromecast ultra with the purchase.

I too have pre ordered this game on Stadia as I'd honestly rather play an actual Linux build. Plus it's not like we knew it would work in proton DAY 0. I applaud Valve's effort but seeing as I haven't been able to grab a 6900XT yet it would be awhile before I could play this game the way I wanted to locally, therefore: Stadia.

Proton, Steam Play?! GG :D
Pay $60 and you will got $10 product because no RTX, no DLSS, no perfect performance, Proton just runs that game with low FPS and also no one knows how many times that low FPS goes to 0 when game will be updated.
Damn! Absofuckinlutely smart marketing from CD Project.
I'm not dumb to buy that sh*t. Yes, sh*t, because you are paying same as Windows users and getting maximum 25% quality compared Windows users.

Cries again in out of stock.

Ah, so business as usual with their recent drivers..

?

I was mostly making a crack at this recent bit of fun.

I think performance will be OK. I don't care about DLSS (I think it's an anti-feature in this case, I'd rather have lower resolution with better quality). Ray tracing isn't a big deal too, but it will eventually become usable. That's WIP now for both Mesa and vkd3d-proton.

I wonder what settings I will get to use with Cyberpunk. All I need is 4K 30FPS for chill couch gaming.

But DX12 to Vulkan is still beta, so I guess that is too much to ask at this time. But who knows!

But this is damn amazing. Good job Valve!

First time for a long time I would prefer to use a AMD graphic card.
I will wait for NVidia support.
Anyway it's an incredible news some Linux gamers could play a AAA games at his official sell date.

You're pulling way too many random numbers out of your ass for something that can't even be benchmarked right now.

Care to elaborate on how you came up with these? Otherwise please shove them back where they came from and wait for the release.

It's almost as if Proton has been working almost perfectly performance-wise for mostly everything that isn't blocked due to anti-cheat.

On a side note, this probably means Cyberpunk (Windows) won't be coming out with a Vulkan renderer either even though it's already working with it on Stadia... What a huge shame.

Are you sure that technically this is how it works on Stadia?

It's just your mind.
I'm saying you are paying same as Windows user and getting absolutely nothing.
Do what your want.

About Vulkan renderer - nothing stops them from adding it later. It's not a priority on release for them.

I'll wait for a native port. If the devs don't support Linux, then I don't support the devs.

You are using very bad words against me. It's internet man, so shame to say bad words against them who you never will be see.

Just be quiet, don't say somenthing like that You're pulling way too many random numbers out of your ass for
ASS

I just say I don't care what you care RTX, DLSS or nothing, I'm saying that paying same as Windows users and got maximum 30% than they is the action of a weak-minded person.

I'm probably one of the few people not excited for this game. All thanks to those skins that require galaxy to activate (My Rewards items).

Otherwise I could forgive painfully playing this game on my 5500XT until I get rid of Nvidia in favor of the 6800XT.

This crops up quite a lot, but yes, all Stadia games are run on Linux, with Vulkan.

As for Cyberpunk - it's a no from me. CDPR is just not a company I'm interested in supporting.

I'll wait for a native port. If the devs don't support Linux, then I don't support the devs.

And that's how you don't get Linux on the desktop.

We must support Proton and the native versions (Alien isolation for example).

Buying it on Steam is different, Valve invested a lot of dev time and money into gaming on Linux.
SO buying this game on Steam you support Proton and Valve Linux devs.

Wondering what the specific missing features are in the Nvidia driver preventing this from working.

Amusingly, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla with vkd3d works on Nvidia but not AMD.

This extension is needed.

VK_VALVE_mutable_descriptor_type

Currently only implemented on RADV.

Any at least a ballpark ETA on when can we expect Nvidia to catch up? I haven't really been interested in playing a day 0 release before so I have no experience or data on this.

Well said.

And in one/two years make Proton the standard what linux deserves.
