You asked, quite a lot actually and now System76 are going to be delivering with the all-AMD powered Pangolin. Considering the power of the newer generation AMD chipsets, it's not surprising that they've seen plenty of requests for a laptop powered by team red.
While no formal press release has been made about it (that we've seen anyway?), they have announced it briefly on Twitter with a coming soon page. Interestingly, the Pangolin looks to be their most affordable laptop and one they're calling an "everyday laptop" with the price starting at $849.

In other System76 news, it seems their custom keyboard is still in progress. Founder and CEO, Carl Richell, showed off a shot on Twitter of the prototype keyboard milling. Will be very interesting to see what they actually come up with in the end, as we know it's going to be quite customizable from what they teased back in August.
Quoting: PublicNuisanceHopefully they use Coreboot.Good question: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=System76-New-Coreboot-AMD
Quoting: iiariAs a S76 owner, I was disappointed in the battery size too, considering the early reviews have indicated the AMD chips battery life is a bit less than their Intel counterparts. Doubly disappointed considering that S76's reputation (Lemur Pro excepted) has long been that their battery life is often left wanting. I wonder if there is an expansion port here that'll take another battery... And am I reading it right that there's 3 USB A ports and 1 USB C? What chassis from what year is this?
Also, as I've posted elsewhere, I can't go back to a 16:9 screen. Here's hoping the next X1 Carbon Thinkpad likely upcoming this Feb/March will have 16:10 screen and be purchased preinstalled with Linux!
Definitely exciting to see S76 enter the AMD space, though, and hopeful of having my next desktop be a Thelio that's all AMD.
From what I've read, the latest AMD mobile chips, are on par or more efficient than Intel's 10th and 11th gen chips. AMD's previous generation Ryzen mobile chips were less efficient than Intel, but the 4000 series is on par or better in most cases, while typically giving better performance as well.
Quoting: PublicNuisanceHopefully they use Coreboot.
I hope so too. I think that Coreboot first has to be updated to support it. But once supported, I hope they switch to it. They did with several other of their laptops, well after they first launched. So I'm hopeful they will here as well.
I plan to upgrade my aging Dell Latitude and its dual-core i7-5600U, that has to have its fan kick up any time it boosts, which is pretty much anytime I use it as its GPU is basically being maxed running my dual 1440p displays and playing a web video. I would love a System76 machine with AMD hardware, but I just wish it was a 14" chassis. 15" is just bigger than I want. I found 14" the perfect size. The E7250 which is 12" is too small as well, especially since it has huge bezels.
Quoting: The_Aquabatimho not a nice name considering the reputation of the said animal. The reputation as the world's most illegally-trafficked mammal, with populations declining over a million in the last decade? Yes, I think it's high time we set about improving this tragic reputation by making people aware of these majestic animals and working to protect them better!
Quoting: iiariexpansion port here that'll take another battery
No, just no. Battery should be standardly a large size. Honestly what the heck is the point of a laptop if the battery isn't the largest you can possibly cram in. A 49wh battery makes me think this is a chassis from a few years ago that expects a spinning disk hard drive.
Quoting: whizseAnyhow, nice to see AMD. Still however waiting for a EU store/reseller.
Does anyone know how much extra is the shipping and taxes to EU?
Else I'll have to get a desktop.
Quoting: minkiuHere's hoping the my laptop doesn't die until Thunderbolt 4/USB4 is in an AMD laptop like this one, I want to be able to plug an eGPU if desired. I think a nice laptop like this one + egpu is the future (for me) :)
Else I'll have to get a desktop.
That and I really like the idea of standardized chargers for all devices.
See more from me
