No Epic Games Store support on Linux? Well, one developer is helping to break down that barrier with the newly released Heroic Games Launcher. Not official but better than nothing? As usual, the open source community delivers where a big company will not.

What's interesting about the Heroic Games Launcher is that it's built on top of another bit of open source tech called Legendary, which is a command-line downloader and launcher for the Epic Games Store with the Heroic Games Launcher giving it an easier to use GUI.

It already has a number of the main features needed including supporting the EGS login, downloading and installing games. All the basic parts are there and they're quickly improving it.

Note: since the EGS overall has no Linux support, it does rely on the Wine compatibility layer to actually run Windows games downloaded on your Linux box.

Considering all the free games Epic have been handing out over the last year, I've no doubt plenty of you have been logging into EGS just to claim them so this will hopefully help some of our readers get the most of of gaming on their Linux box.

Check out the Heroic Games Launcher on GitHub.

Quoting: Phlebiacit never prompts for anything at all and just shows a blank window.
Yeah, I'm aware of this bug and this new version fixed it:

Yep, that's fixed now! Looking forward to UI improvements... I decided to install "A Short Hike" as a test, and saw it still uses xterm for that. Once it finished the installation, I had to close the window manually, and the app window didn't refresh. But when I went back to the library, it recognized it was installed, and clicking it showed the Play/Uninstall buttons.

Search and filter (at least toggle between installed/all) options for the library are also in order, I would think.

When installing, remember the last install location (and maybe have an option to not bother asking all the time).

If you click on your username, it shows you a big LOGOUT button, but no Cancel or Back to Library (have to restart if I don't want to log out, I guess?). Oh, clicking on the username goes back - not very intuitive.

Yeah, everything you said is being fixed on the next version that is almost done.
So probably this weekend we will have version 1.0 with the new design and options to use different wine versions, prefixes, etc.

Thanks for trying and you can always put requests or bugs on our github as well. :D

Great! A question about the integrated legendary - are you making customizations to it compared to upstream? If not, perhaps you would consider having it as a dependency again, at least for packaged versions (i.e. RPM)? It's in the Fedora updates repo.

I'm not changing anything on it, it is the same executable that we can download from their GH page.
The thing is that the dependency can work for DEB and RPM, Pacman probably as well, but for the tar.xz and the AppImage the user will need to install it so it can be a mess. Another thing is that I can control the version I want, so if they change something on their side that can break heroic, it won't affect me until I update on my side.

But I need to align that with then, to be honest.

I don't really understand the fanatic love & hate to Steam and Epic (among the others)
No, of course you don't. Hrm . . .
Imagine you own a car . . . say, a Renault. You're fairly fond of your Renault. But it can be hard to get service for it in North America.
And imagine there are two chains of car mechanic shops. And one of them, we'll call it "Steam", advertises that they like Renaults, and they have Renault experts on staff, and they make an effort to get Renault parts in. And they back efforts to make standards for car parts so hopefully at some point all the car parts will work with Renaults. And the other one, we'll call it "Epic", refuses to repair Renaults at all, won't even do an oil change on a Renault. Even though you happen to know some Renault owners who have stuck fake Honda symbols on their car, and it turns out the service is decent if you do that. And they make a couple lines of car parts, and those car parts are designed to not fit on a Renault.

Which of these two mechanic shop chains are you going to like? Which are you going to resent?
