Just like there's the awesome OpenTTD for fans of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, there's also OpenLoco for players who want to play through the classic Locomotion. Not a project we've covered here before it seems, so we're making that right today.
Originally released back in 2004, it's actually a spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon but it was not as loved due to various problems with the original release. Perhaps though it can have a new life thanks to OpenLoco. Here's the original description if you've not heard of it:
Explore a vast and detailed world and build a Transportation Empire! Lay down tracks, roads, and bridges. Use railroads, trucking lines, buses, airplanes, and ships to outmaneuver ruthless competitors who will try to take business away from you, and see who is the best at meeting the needs of a growing metropolis. Cash in on a world of opportunity moving raw materials, goods, and people efficiently from one destination to another. Rake in huge profits as the years advance from 1900 to 2000 and beyond. Experience different world variations, difficulty levels, and complete goals of different scenarios. Run the world your way!
Just recently OpenLoco had a new release with version 21.02 fixing up a bunch of issues along with implementing these new features into it:
- Allow vehicles to be cloned from the vehicle window.
- Automatically save the game at regular intervals.
- Optional new map generator (experimental).
- Allow following a vehicle on the main viewport.
We'll be keeping up to date on OpenLoco now, so we'll let you know as the contributors push out new releases with new features and fixes and eventually when it's further along we'll give it a full test-drive.
Find OpenLoco on GitHub. Since it needs the original assets you can buy them from GOG and Steam.
