Stadia is back on the spotlight and not for their overhype, new games or stopping first-party games, in fact it's due to Terraria now being cancelled due to Google locking the accounts of a developer. This isn't just any developer either, this is coming from Terraria developer Andrew Spinks, who is the founder of Re-Logic.

Spinks wrote a thread on Twitter, highlighting the issue after being locked out of a Google account now for three weeks. That means access has been lost to anything purchased on Google Play, all the data on Google Drive, even the official YouTube account for Terraria cannot be accessed due to all this.

In a follow-up tweet Spinks mentioned that the bridge has been burned and so Terraria for Google Stadia is officially done and cancelled and that Re-Logic will "no longer support any of your platforms moving forward" and in another "I will not be involved with a corporation that values their customers and partners so little. Doing business with you is a liability."

You would think, that if it was coming to Stadia and it was already rated for it by PEGI, that Google would be keeping a close eye on it. Enough to ensure the developer can actually access anything. Apparently not.

A time where Google could really use some good news for Stadia, treating developers like this is clearly not going to go over well with anyone. This will likely put off other developers too, the damage of this happening with such a hugely popular game can't be understated.

It's a shocking reminder that many of us (myself included) rely too heavily one on single provider for multiple things. Personally, I have begun moving from Gmail wherever possible to ProtonMail and might I suggest you try it too. The trouble with Google is they are almost everywhere, I couldn't imagine losing so much and never getting an answer.

One of the reasons I have my own nextcloud at a german provider which gets backed up every day to a storage service of my choice, my own domains and with that mail adresses.

I do not even have my contacts at google.

Costs me about 4 euros a month, which is not a lot.

I do use google... for everything I do not care if it's gone. Basically Gmail is my mailing list and mail for online accounts I do not care about overmuch, where I'd just create another account if it's gone.

To be fair I never made that assumption, and indeed I've seen reporting elsewhere that is basically hate without reason.

However it's possibly, probably, not a corporate account. So that makes things more problematic for the individual, and unless it's a general account issue (from what I can tell, no it's not) then Google shouldn't block the entire account for ToS breaches on a single service. That's bad of Google, regardless of the actions of the individual, a reminder not to place such reliance on a single account, and a warning that you might be without realising it.

Due to the SSO nature of google accounts I don't believe you can be banned from just one of their services - but rather everywhere you use [email protected] to log in will be hit.

We used to use a shared corporate account to access the google services we use for the business, we were told that this was a bad idea exactly because what is described by our google rep. So now each individual service is run by separate accounts and we grant access to each employees corporate accounts as needed. This way is an employee account is compromised or somehow violates the ToS the damage is minimal.

Sure; if they ban the account that owns a service we loose access to that service, but as nobody is actually using it that seems very unlikely.


And I agree it does sound like it was his personal account ( making it even more strange it would be the sole access to their youtube account ), especially the bit with having spend 1000s of dollars makes it sound like yet another kid caught at cheating in fortnite Basically the entire thing (to me) reads as if he knows he has done wrong but expected special treatment, especially because he admits hes been in contact but wont say what he was banned for.

Also if they will "no longer support any of your platforms moving forward" - why hasn't he told his publisher yet? because 505 is still selling it on googlePlay services :P

All in all it seems like a little too public tempertantrum

Long time user of Gmail (since beta 2004) and advocate of Google Services & Phones I recently closed out many Google Accounts. Very soon they are deleting accounts if you don't login for a period of time including the pictures, besides feeding your pictures to their AI to profile you besides stupid bullshit like what clearly happened here in this post.


If you want to leave Gmail, here's the way out. You will need to enable "Less Secure Apps" to enable `imapsync` access

Then delete your account or delete all data in your account (eg: wipe out everything in Thunderbird in "All Mail") -- if you need your account for "account recovery" of things on the internet for a while just leave it at 0% usage.

You can also self-host or purchase Cloud space with a App Suite that covers pretty much all the basics Google does -- using it the last few months IMO it does Files, Calendar, Webmail linkup, Documents/Spreadsheets, Password Management, Address Book, and apparantly does Talk which recently I learned using Materbridge can link into existing services like Discord (I haven't setup yet), the Video Calls seem to work okay User to User, etc...

Y'know, it occurs to me that it would be a lot easier to break up email than a lot of the other stuff. Email doesn't really have any "network effects" in the social network sense because it's standardized--you're not going to find that if you use a small player's email client you somehow fail to receive email from Google.

Man, suddenly I feel ahead of the curve. As a university employee my email is through work, I have a vestigial Facebook page which I visit maybe once a year, I don't have files in the cloud. I do buy stuff on Amazon some, but not enough that I'd have any big worries if I was somehow locked out of it. I do have some kind of Google ID, but I only use it for, like, if I'm reading articles with certain fairly common comment systems and want to comment I'll use the Google ID.
All in all, the only online service that would make me even bust out a few cusswords if they dumped me would be, well, Steam. I haven't downloaded all my games, only the ones I've actually played . . .
I'm kind of the same. I don't have a work email account; I'm still using the one my ISP provided when I signed up 15 years ago (and yes, I'm seriously considering something more “portable”... but for once, procrastination paid off, because five-ten years back I'd probably have gone to GMail, like almost everyone else did). I bought maybe four or five items on Amazon last year, and most of them in the run-up to Christmas. I've never used any cloud or “social media” services at all, and while I did create a Google account for Android, I finally installed LineageOS on my phone a few months ago.

Losing Steam would certainly suck, but I think of all of that type of thing it's the... least untrustworthy, let's say.

Of my three tabletop RPG campaigns which met in person in the before times (mostly the same people in all of them), all use Roll20; one uses it by itself, one alongside Zoom, and one alongside Jitsi. Jitsi seems pretty good to me.

The Terraria story really broke my trust in how Google handles their accounts, and so being a pro-privacy person is not the only reason I will avoid Google anymore. I deleted nearly all my YouTube videos the other day going back ten years and I am going to find a new domain registrar. After that, I will have no accounts with them that hold value.

We still don't know what exactly happened, and we still have only one side of the story. Not that I hope that Google will clarify it, but everything is possible. Maybe someone else had access to the respective account and did some crap with it. Unlikely, but possible.
I'm also intrigued by the developer silence that followed the initial turmoil. His YouTube account was reinstated a couple of days ago and there was no comment about it.

Video-wise I try to get into a habit to look at odysee.com first before I have to go to YouTube since most people I follow are unfortunately not on both.

LBRY / Odysee.com are slowly getting better... I've been looking for alternatives to YouTube for several years, and LBRY / Odysee.com is the first time I can put my hand on my heart and say I have found something comparable to YouTube.

Sure, YouTube still has a lot of advantages over LBRY / Odysee.com - but the latter is quickly catching up and every day, the content is getting better.

By the way, have you seen the "Watch on LBRY" extension for Firefox? It seems to work pretty well, and with more and more content coming over to LBRY / Odysee.com, it's certainly handy to have installed (it only supports LBRY at this stage though).

Yes, and then Google just randomly throws half the mails you send to people with gmail accounts into their spam folder, where the recipients never see them...

I have two domains (my surname is different to the rest of my family) and whilst that the domain I use for myself (a ".id.au" domain) has this happen from time-to-time, it never happens with my other domain (a ".com.au" domain that the rest of my family uses).
