Valve & Netflix teamed up for a Dota anime series

By -

If, like me, you're a bit of an Anime fan you might want to keep an eye on Netflix as DOTA: Dragon's Blood has been announced for release in March. Yeah, I know, this is not your usual gaming news but it's gaming related and heck I'm excited about it.

The story will be centred around a Dragon Knight, with the synopsis being short and sweet "The sweeping fantasy series tells the story of Davion, a renowned Dragon Knight devoted to wiping the scourge from the face of the world. Following encounters with a powerful, ancient eldwurm as well as the noble Princess Mirana on a secret mission of her own, Davion becomes embroiled in events much larger than he could have ever imagined."

From the press release:

“Fans will love how we’ve imagined the DOTA 2 universe and woven together an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story about some of their favorite characters,” said showrunner and executive producer Ashley Edward Miller. “The cinematic animation, acting and music are simply next level and I’m grateful to Valve for supporting our creative ambitions.”

It releases on March 25, exclusively on Netflix.

You can play Dota 2 free on Steam.

Maybe Valve should expand into digital Anime & Manga distribution (as opposed to streaming). That is also one of those areas where a market failure leads to a lot of piracy, similar to how it was with computer games before Valve made digital stores popular.

Wow.

All the characters they could have picked, there's what, 120 of them? Almost all with amazing, visually impressive designs and costumes, flashy abilities and compelling backstories, and this is what they picked? A generic looking human warrior whose outfit is mainly brown?

Gotta say, not impressed at all from this teaser. It's got less to draw me in than any of the trailers for the game itself that Valve has made. Seriously, compare it to this from nine years ago.

I know which one makes me want to know more about the world and the people in it.

Netflix seems to have no clue in regards to Anime. Edit: Removed some further nonsense I mixed up.

Gonna have to agree on this. Plus their one-liner synopsis is the most non-descript and cliché I’ve seen in a long time. "Warrior dude wants to be a hero, unexpectedly teams up with princess who is more than she appears, gets more than he bargained for." I’ll go out on a limb and guess that the dragons he used to fight aren’t as evil as he thought, the princess has a quirky pet for comedic relief and, I don’t know, the order he works for is actually behind the scourge somehow.

Amusingly, I just took a second look and I'm pretty sure that's the same guy at 1:27 in the much older video, except doing something interesting.

Looking at Standard Fantasy Synopsis #14 there, I suspect this is gonna be one of those series that tries to take a "realistic and grounded" approach, and will have a lot more to do with the politics of the factions, delivered via long exposition scenes. There's my prediction.

You have to be careful... stealing the entire manuscript and publishing it here. In the future consider to at least using the spoilers tag.

not really an anime, like avatar or even castlevania, this show borrow the anime asthetic and maybe is done by an japanese studio, but that dont means its an "anime".
i know that for the japaneses this word refer to any animation, not only those made on japan, but i dont think this will have much of an appeal to the japanese market or the internation otaku audience, only for those who know nothing about anime except for a few popular shows (naruto and whatever the cable tv aired).

now i'm not saying that this will be an shit show...
but i have 0 interest in seeing it, and after seeing the trailer, my interest raised to -1 .

i dont play dota, but that is not the main issue.

Yes, it is him. Dragon knight . I expect origin story how he get dragon blood with ability transform into Elder Dragon Form.

He is one from theoretically usable hero for anime, with cool ability.

You must play Fire Emblem games.

About the OP, I will watch it if it's still on Netflix when The Witcher season 2 is out (because that's when I'll subscribe again).

Basically this. Usable heroes here are Luna, Mirana, Sven, Anti-Mage... They aren't as many, they aren't too aliens when put against humans (because well, humans exist in-universe, so they are a pretty staple hook to get viewers on), but DK at least as quite the bit of room for his story, and the recognition.

Weirdest bit for me will be this:

DK in game is voiced by Tony Todd (Candyman from the movies and Vortigaunts in HL2 as VA), but he won't be the VA of Davion, he'll be the VA of Slyrak (Slyrak is the Dragon that is hunted by Davion and willingly die to Davion's blade to give him his dragon powers. But it's hinted that we can't know if it's Davion that got the powers, or that Slyrak took over Davion).

Is that a hint for massive headcannon or is that a casting choice? I don't know, but I know they did their homework on the lore, so there is that to look toward to.
