It's been quite a while since we had a community chat post for Linux gaming, so let's get it going again: what have you been gaming on Linux lately?

There's so many games releasing all the time, along with cloud gaming very much being a thing that you can game across all sorts of Linux devices now. New isn't always better though of course and I often go back to the comfort of a few "safety" games that I know I will enjoy. Lately, that's been a likely unhealthy amount of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

With the latest Operation named Broken Fang, it pulled in the a Retakes game mode and I have to say, I have been enjoying that massively. It's much quicker to get through, with the T side planting the bomb as soon as a round starts. Smaller levels along with picking your loadout from cards, it really has mixed up how to play CS:GO for the better. The Wingman mode is also a huge amount of fun with quick 2v2 rounds. Well worth looking into if you've not played either modes.

Apart from that, I can't get away without mentioning Valheim, the singleplayer and co-op Viking survival game. It's simply brilliant. I've been happily playing it alone, as I'm just constantly discovering new things and it's a real joy while now and then hopping into the community-run GamingOnLinux servers (info in our Discord) to see what amazing creations people have done with the building tools.

  • Surviving Mars - also still in the tutorial, but it's city building on Mars, what's not to love?

  • Albion Online - it's a damn love-hate relationship with this game for years

I've been switching back and forth between Vampyr on my computer and Bloodborne on my ps4.

Got stuck on a boss fight in Vampyr so took a bit of a break and tried out Bloodborne and ended up almost platinuming it so I guess back to Vampyr soon! Might be worth it to restart it since I got a handle on how leveling works.

I've mostly been playing Terranigma via Mednafen (since I really can't be bothered to jump through Retroarch's hoops) and flirting with getting into Unreal World. The former is great but shows its age in sometimes frustrating mechanics, and the latter seems absorbing if difficult.

Been playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion again in my linux notebook this time. I coudn't activate all of the unofficial patches, but fortunately I was able to use most of then with proton.

I've being trying my hand at Cities: Skylines. It definitely has a very Sim City 4 vibe, although the humor is different, not as whacky. I'm still trying to get down the placement of streets and such. The game really want to fight me on it, but over all, it is quite fun.

I've also decided to stop buying games, probably for the year. I have so many, I really don't need anymore. My only exception would be if it was something I would play immediately. (For example, a DLC to a game im
currently playing). My personal bet is that I have plenty to keep me occupied for a long time to come.

Death Stranding. An addictive courier simulator in a very weird world. It runs at ~35 FPS on my PC and crashes sometimes, or even crashes the whole OS. Probably because WineD3D isn't as good as DVXK yet.

Ni no Kuni™ II: Revenant Kingdom. Kind of boring and repetitive. Characters' voices hurt my ears.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Exactly the same CoD4 but with better graphics. It's very unstable, crashes too much, and when a new level is loading for the first time, it takes up to 10 minutes for compiling shaders. But at least it perform at 120+ FPS with no hiccups or freezes, unlike CoD WWII. Don't buy it for the multiplayer mode though, because it's dead.

Castle In The Darkness. At first glance it looks like a generic 8-bit platformer with mediocre pixel art, but in fact it's a well-made game with good gameplay, humour and lots of secrets. It very cheap at this moment on the Steam sale. Warning: use Proton 3.16, and there's no controller support (so use AntiMicroX as well).

Quake Champions with Proton is finally working with proper audio after I updated the kernel to 5.10.12 recently (as well as the rest of the packages on my Gentoo box), so I've been playing a lot of that the last couple of weeks. Used to love the older quakes, this brings back memories...but without mod support and dedicated servers I'll probably get sick of it soon.

Also, on my FreeBSD laptop with Fermi graphics, I've been spending a lot of time with Horizon Chase Turbo, Major Mayhem, Sky Force Anniversary and Sky Force Reloaded. Steam on FreeBSD works great btw, has Proton support too, but since Fermi doesn't support Vulkan, I need to stick to native OpenGL titles.
