Frostwood Interactive today announce that their latest title, Forgotten Fields, will debut on Steam and GOG on April 14th.

This follows their successful Kickstarter campaign that saw over £10,000 in funding and a demo release during the Steam Summer Festival in 2020, Forgotten Fields will take you on a journey back home prior to it being sold off to another family to rekindle memories for Sid, a struggling author with a creative block.

The developer, Frostwood Interactive, is made up of a single person - Armaan Sandhu. The studio was founded for the development of their first game, Rainswept, which released back in 2019 and that too supported Linux. Forgotten Fields takes inspiration from the warm coastal locales of Goa, India along with games like Life is Strange wrapped up in the same stylization as their previous title Rainswept.

Sandhu mentioned they've "always been a big fan of single player games that focus on storytelling, characters, and atmosphere and the goal with my own projects is to create cinematic works that hopefully move, affect and influence people emotionally". Additionally Sandhu said "I'm really excited to share a game world based off Goa, India with the rest of the world. I think it'll be a very new and unique experience, and I can't wait to see what players think of it!."

Launching April 14 on Steam and GOG.

Unless the issues with the demo have been fixed (they haven't been fixed yet in the demo) then the only Linux gamers who will be enjoying this game will be those using closed source Nvidia drivers or possibly closed source AMD drivers (haven't tested those myself). Those with Mesa or Nouveau drivers will not be able to play it due to a glitch in Unity that hasn't been fixed for years.

Some Unity graphical problems were solved in Mesa 21, try it with that.

-force-vulkan as a workaround.

Second workaround is to override the OpenGL version. Presumably this disables the problematic feature:
MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.2

Running the game with a debug context results in this warning (Not present in the 3.2 context):
Mesa: User error: GL_INVALID_VALUE in glUniform1i(invalid sampler/tex unit index for uniform 256)

I'm guessing it's a Unity bug, but will retry with Mesa 21 and file a bug just to be sure.

Problem is still there with 21. I filed a bug with Mesa:
