Metro Exodus arrives for Linux on April 14

By -

Originally released back in 2019, Metro Exodus from 4A Games and Deep Silver now has a launch date for their official Linux build which will land on April 14.

"Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. Explore the Russian wilderness across vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter."

In a short and sweet update on Twitter today, the official Metro account sent this out:

Spartans, we have an update for you on the #Mac & #Linux versions of #MetroExodus We are working hard on bringing these to you, and we can finally let you know the train has left the station. Both versions are now on track to arrive on Wednesday April 14.

According to a follow-up tweet, the Linux port will support Ray Tracing too.

Features:

  • Embark on an incredible journey - board the Aurora, a heavily modified steam locomotive, and join a handful of survivors as they search for a new life in the East
  • Experience Sandbox Survival - a gripping story links together classic Metro gameplay with new huge, non-linear levels
  • A beautiful, hostile world - discover the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness, brought to life with stunning day / night cycles and dynamic weather
  • Deadly combat and stealth - scavenge and craft in the field to customize your arsenal of hand-made weaponry, and engage human and mutant foes in thrilling tactical combat
  • Your choices determine your comrades’ fate - not all your companions will survive the journey; your decisions have consequence in a gripping storyline that offers massive re-playability
  • The ultimate in atmosphere and immersion - a flickering candle in the darkness; a ragged gasp as your gasmask frosts over; the howl of a mutant on the night wind - Metro will immerse and terrify you like no other game…

I still don't understand if they are claiming that "Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition" and "Mac and Linux versions of Metro Exodus" are the same thing, since it seems that only the Enhanced Edition will feature RT.

The way they talked about this in their February 15 announcement suggests they are two different things. This is PR-speak, if they don't explicitly say "Enhanced Edition", they do not mean Enhanced Edition.

So that tweet was rather vague. As it stands for AMD right now, the hardware is capable but the drivers aren't ready yet. Fingers crossed...

And, personally, I couldn't care less about ray tracing.

I'm probably some weird exception, but I still don't see what RTX brings to the table... I look at screenshots of games RTX on/off and it doesn't impress me that much... "More realistic lighting systems"... Ok, I understand the point... So? You could pass me an RTX off image for an RTX ON one and I wouldn't second guess it; the games are looking fabulous even with RTX off. Will I pay a premium for RTX? Will I pay a premium to see my fps drop from 80fps to 40fps because of RTX? Nope!

I probably have modest requirements.

The special enhanced edition has a game engine revamp, for more advanced ray tracing. The normal edition has RT but won't see all the new extras they add in.

Quoting: RoosterWait there are exceptions to this? I thought it's in Steam rules.
Nope. There's been 1 or 2 Linux/macOS only like Call of Duty: Black Ops - Mac Edition https://store.steampowered.com/app/214630/Call_of_Duty_Black_Ops__Mac_Edition/ and Arma: Cold War Assault Mac/Linux https://store.steampowered.com/app/594550/Arma_Cold_War_Assault_MacLinux/

In games that truly use it you can see fairly dramatic differences. On games which only use it as a gimmick on the other hand....
Also, using a full path traced pipeline instead of raster can dramatically simplify the life for the programmer, which in turn will tend to mean higher quality games for you.

I love how they casually confirm ray tracing support in a reply on Twitter as if it was just a matter of course.

Maybe, but I still haven't found a single game that I'm interrested into, that made me want to buy an RTX GPU.

Edit: Who knows, I might change my mind, when the RTX version of Witcher 3 will be available...

Quoting: Joeg1484Oh man, I JUST bought this for Proton because I didnt know when it was going to be released :-/... I hope I can still play it on Linux or if I have to re purchase it... Bummer... I guess I need more patience :-D
You're fine, buying on Steam 99% of the time gives you access to all platforms (1-2 games being the exception).
Does playing via PROTON in the 1st couple of weeks count as a linux sale to the producer?
mylka Mar 25, 2021
Quoting: KohlyKohlI will buy this as soon as I can find a 30 series card. So, I guess I'll be getting this in 2022.

in 2022 nvidia will release the 4000 series...... or they keep making money with 3000 and move the date to 2023

anyway... i wonder how much money they will make with linux/mac versions, or is this a heart project?

Yep, Proton was confirmed as "counting as a Linux sale" quite early after it was first announced.

I'm a bit optimist since they didn't mention Steam, so I hope we'll see it on GOG too!

Ha, seriously. The 'perfect storm' of bullshit has hit us computer nerds, where all the new cards are being bought up by mining farms, or they're bought by people who think they can just double/triple the MSRP. Even the 20 series are marked ultra high...

It's a perfect storm, but it's more than just miners and scalpers. Some interesting insight from Linux Tech Tips on this subject from two days ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A4yk-P5ukY

Back on topic - this is an immediate insta-buy for me, even at full price. I loved the first two games, although they have their (minor) flaws. Can't wait to play this!

Yeah, watched that yesterday. Linus... I mistype it as Linux too ha! Yeah with chip shortages too. It's freaking nuts.

I've been looking forward to this game as well, though I still need to win the first one!

Yeah, I do the same! So felt justified poking fun. Like my fingers will start typing Linu.. and just end with an x. With Anthony working for him, it has started to become Linux Tech Tips anyhow.

Right, I guess we'll see what sort of RT we get in Linux.
I'm excited to try it out once the drivers mature. :)

I hope they fixed the gamma bug, the night vision bug that makes enemies spot you...
And I want the benchmark tool too.
