Total War: ROME REMASTERED, the recent announcement from Creative Assembly and Feral Interactive is coming to Linux on April 29 and here's a look at what's improved. It's going to be replacing the original too, which only supported Windows, while this will be properly cross-platform across Linux, macOS and Windows together.

Some of the new improvements include updated battlefield environments, new unit models, an enhanced campaign map, improved visual effects during battles and much more. To help give an overview and to whet your appetites take a look at the new comparison video below:

As a reminder of what's coming with it:

  • Improved Visuals: Total War: ROME REMASTERED ushers the classic strategy title into the modern gaming era with full 4K visuals, native support for ultra-high-definition resolution and overhauled environment, battlefield, and character models.
  • New Gameplay Content: Wage war across new fronts with 16 previously unplayable factions to play on top of the original 22, and send the new Merchant agents on missions to establish lucrative trade networks across the map, buy out rival Merchants, and assert your empire’s economic power.
  • Modern Features: Players can exercise more control than ever with new features such as a tactical map during battles, plus heat maps and icon overlays in campaign mode. Existing mechanics have also been improved, including an overhauled diplomacy system, wider camera zoom levels throughout the game, and camera rotation on the campaign map.
  • Improved Help Systems: A swathe of improved support has been added, including a redesigned tutorial, a new in-game Wiki, expansive advice and tooltips, and improved accessibility for colour blind players.
  • Cross-platform Multiplayer: Players can enjoy cross-platform multiplayer between Windows, macOS and Linux, a first for the Total War franchise.
  • Complete Content: Total War: ROME REMASTERED includes the Barbarian Invasion and Alexander expansions in glorious new detail, and players will also gain access to the original ROME: Total War Collection (Windows only).

It releases on April 29 and is now available to pre-order for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 from Steam or directly from Feral Interactive via the Feral Store.

They're also doing an Q&A on the Total War Discord today at 3PM UTC.

Of course, the real question here is whether we're gonna be getting a remastered Europa Barbarorum along with the remastered main game, otherwise there isn't much point in playing this.

(And of course, the real real question is whether or not we'll still be alive and kicking if and when the mod's developers -which are probably not even around anymore anyway- finally release Europa Barbarorum III to the public.)

I think it's actually kinda funny that they aren't even planning to release it on the Epic store.

It's not like there's any reason to. It's a terrible storefront with no customers that isn't available for all of the platforms the game has been developed for. Plus I'd imagine that Feral are privately quite salty about Troy.

I wish that I enjoyed these Total War games more since I've purchased so many of them wanting to support Feral's porting. Maybe it's time revisit and give them a second chance.

Yeah, Epic isn't paying for it this time, so why bother?

I wonder what ever happened to the port for Total War: Rome II. Was going to come out but never did in the end. I remember reading about it in Linux Format magazine and were signs of it on Steamdb.

The creators of EB have already said that they won't port or make new EB for the Remaster, since they're far too focused on Medieval 2
