While it was playable with the Steam Play Proton compatibility layer, 4A Games and Deep Silver have today officially released Metro Exodus for Linux.

"Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. Explore the Russian wilderness across vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter."

Game Features:

  • Embark on an incredible journey - board the Aurora, a heavily modified steam locomotive, and join a handful of survivors as they search for a new life in the East
  • Experience Sandbox Survival - a gripping story links together classic Metro gameplay with new huge, non-linear levels
  • A beautiful, hostile world - discover the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness, brought to life with stunning day / night cycles and dynamic weather
  • Deadly combat and stealth - scavenge and craft in the field to customize your arsenal of hand-made weaponry, and engage human and mutant foes in thrilling tactical combat
  • Your choices determine your comrades’ fate - not all your companions will survive the journey; your decisions have consequence in a gripping storyline that offers massive re-playability
  • The ultimate in atmosphere and immersion - a flickering candle in the darkness; a ragged gasp as your gasmask frosts over; the howl of a mutant on the night wind - Metro will immerse and terrify you like no other game…

As a reminder here's the specifications suggested for the Linux port:

Since Metro Exodus supports Ray Tracing on Linux, expect to need a powerful GPU to get good framerates in it.

Giveaway (CLOSED)

To go along with the release, a kind reader has offered up three copies to give away! These will be sent as a Steam Gift, so once winners are picked they will need to provide their Steam account for us to friend and then gift the copies. How to enter? Simply make it clear in your comment you wish to win a copy and winners will be picked Friday, April 16. Note: giveaway now closed!

Note: as of right now, it looks like they haven't sorted out all the key depots on Steam, meaning not everyone will actually be able to download the Linux version until they attach it all up correctly on Steam. It's a common pitfall we wrote about before to help developers. Update: this should now be solved.

If you find you have some audio popping, adding this as launch option may solve it:

PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%

You can buy it on Fanatical (on sale), Humble Store, and Steam

Here's some initial footage from the Linux port running on Ultra at 1080p. Recording did reduce the performance:

If it's totally random, I would of course love to get a copy. But otherwise it might be best to gift it to whom played and finished the first two games, which I haven't so far.

Welp, it indeed doesn't run on Wayland and it doesn't seem like tweaking the config files makes much of a change there, so the game is probably doing some kind of weird X11 hackery that is not compatible with XWayland. Although it seems like others that have managed to get the game running are running into memory leaks, so maybe I am not missing out too much. Definitely needs a patch or two this one.

i really loved the books and the other Metro games, so i'd be happy to get a key :D

after the EGS-desaster i really hadn't have much hope that they would release this for linux, so its a really pleasant surprise that they did after all - might make up for the fact that they sold themselfs to the devil in making their game exclusive ^^

I remember the first comment of a native version being worked on in February 15, 2020. This was very exciting news since i'd just finished the previous games days before the post. Recently, I decided to re-play the series in anticipation of the newest port, because of how excellent the series is and how well it runs. I've held off on playing it via Proton with the strong belief that they'd get the native version out soon. I'm happy it's finally been released! This is the first port I've ever tracked from the first comment to release. It was quite an journey catching up on all the news articles and announcements then seeing the Linux port on Steam. I hope see this more with the types of games I like.

I too would like to participate in getting a free copy.

ok i got the game to work. i had to switch over to gnome on xorg. the game, natively, doesn't run under wayland. it crashes. at least for me. only works in an actual xorg session.

so i guess if i want to keep playing it on wayland i have to use proton as it will only launch under wayland via proton.

i got the idea because going through its files i saw sdl2.so files. sdl2 provides native wayland support. so it made me think it might be a wayland issue. i guess they didn't test on wayland :/

They only officially support Ubuntu 20 which runs X.org so they didn't really have a reason to test it on Wayland. It would be nice if they did, but we can't really blame them if they didn't.

Alright, Metro Exodus has landed on Linux and I still don't have a copy... So count me in for the giveaway.

I think my good old 1050Ti is going to have a hard time running it but I don't mind, I've played 15fps games on software renderer in the past

Now to sift through a whole lot of comments to see if someone actually managed to get RT to work. :)
A patch just landed that supposedly makes RT actually work for people who it crashed on.

Great. Was waiting for this. Downloading now.

I'm really happy that Feral is still doing Linux ports as their games tend to perform a bit better than Windows binaries.

I usually praise Feral, but this is not one of their port, this is 4A's work for once.

Count me in for the giveaway. I promise, I will play the game through the end ;)
(hopefully it runs on my GTX960, but I guess with low details it should work)
