It's been a little while since Valheim got a patch and it seems the developers have been busy, with the latest patch out now with one massive improvement.

Valheim has proven popular, obviously since it was selling millions each week recently but it seems they may have underestimated what people would be building in the game. They've now developed a whole new terrain-modification system - however, you shouldn't notice any difference. They say it was made to "reduce the number of network instances and make loading faster and smoother" along with minor changes to the hoe and pickaxe along with smoother loading "of areas with a lot of terrain modifications".

Here's what else changed:

  • Swamp draugr spawner location fix to prevent draugrs from spawning inside stones
  • Lox pet-sfx fix
  • Torches in locations should no longer support constructions
  • Dolmen location stone size fix
  • New terrain modification system
  • Terrain-modification priority changed (Terrain modifications in an area should load before buildings, only applies to the new terrain modification system)
  • World loading tweaks (to fix issues with ships and buildings getting damaged while loading)
  • Stop server list download when leaving the start menu (to decrease network bandwidth usage)
  • Lowered the amount of stone required to Raise ground using the hoe

The draugr spawning fixes is going to be very welcome. I've lost count of the amount of times a draugr archer inside a stone shot me to death - very annoying. Should make the Swamp a bit less brutal. Less stone to raise the ground is a good one too, that should please players making big builds without creative modes.

Now that such a major back-end upgrade is out, what are you hoping for in the next content update?

Buy Valheim on the Humble Store or Steam.

Quoting: NezchanI would say that the lack of recipes for items you get a lot of (troll hide, bone fragments, maybe something to do with tree seeds?) is probably my biggest issue with the game. You end up just throwing away a lot of material, and that doesn't feel good. So having things you can make with all these extra bits that you quickly outgrow the need for would be nice.

I'd settle for being able to throw things you don't need into a furnace as fuel or something similar.
It's not realistic to expect all items to remain useful throughout - no survival game has that, really.

A filter to not automatically pick some things up would also help.
My partner and me often end up picking up what the other person has just thrown away

My favorite feature of the Sacred games (at least one and two) was that you could set in the options to ignore anything less than a specific color of item. Even if something like 'don't pick up stone while mining Silver Ore' would be a nice convenience.

Quoting: AkonadySo what really is the graphics about in this game?

Looks much better with this mod IMHO:

I used this for a while, though I was getting some graphical glitches, so I turned it back off. Also didn't like the Troll skins.

I'd like more challenging mobs. Not necessarily more aggressive, there's a lot to be said for the long peaceful interludes, but when a mob or a gang of mobs decides I'm the bad guy I'd like to be frightened. "Find your A game or get killed" s/b a thing. And a mass assault on your base should be terrifying.

Quoting: BotonoskiThe current implementation of terrain editing seems to be a fairly basic heightmap sort of thing, I have this vague hope that maybe they'll replace that implementation with something voxel based, as my desire to build underground viking dungeons is immense.
I have no expectations that this'll ever happen, I imagine it'd require a huge upheaval of the underlying systems in place, but a man can dream, frankly it's a saving grace that this game has terrain editing at all as so many in the genre do not.
What I find interesting is that there seemed initially to be a set number of abandoned building configurations. But as I have explored more, I keep coming upon new ones, like the circular tower with a basement, then I found a more complete version of that with an entrance to the lower level and a square off the side for it.

I would love Daggerfall sized dungeons that I can get lost in, now...

I did not see any glitches yet.
But I also disliked the troll look. But deleting the 2 files with the new troll textures makes the trolls look like vanilla again.

Seriously. Once you get up in gear, you end up just going on a punching spree, just for amusement.

Quite true.
But the mob damage is not really the problem, at least when it comes to trolls. For large parts of the game, their damage is frightening. Can easily kill you in one or two hits.
Especially in combination with shaman poisons.

However, it is relatively easy to just run away from them and pelt them with arrows.

What is frightening is the enemies not actually going for you, but for your cart/boat/etc. I think that could be emphasized a bit more - make them go for your stuff more often while you are out adventuring. And announce it, of course, so you actually have a chance to react and not just find your ship smashed when you come back.

Sea Serpents will try and have your boat for lunch. They have mean bite too.

Troll at this point are in the "Just go away and leave me alone. No? ok, FINE! Meet Frostner!" :)

Fulings are the pain. They come in packs, and hit very hard. Doable, but gotta be very careful.
(the 2 star ones in particular)

Deathsquitos are just like regular skeeters now. *SWAT* :D

I agree on the flat roof, and of course, need a hatch.

The terrain optimization is hugely welcome. Did the optterrain on the main base, and it really really
made a diff in the fps. Loading is so much faster now.

(which means making a large sprawling village/farms is doable/playable now)

A way to get rid of unwanted items more easily would be nice indeed.
(right now, it's load up the boat, sail into ocean and dump it. hmm, that's prolly why the sea serpent
wants to eat my boat. Littering!) :P

One of the mods we have enabled will let you pick up an item and delete it out of your inventory. It's quite nice!
