It's been a little while since Valheim got a patch and it seems the developers have been busy, with the latest patch out now with one massive improvement.

Valheim has proven popular, obviously since it was selling millions each week recently but it seems they may have underestimated what people would be building in the game. They've now developed a whole new terrain-modification system - however, you shouldn't notice any difference. They say it was made to "reduce the number of network instances and make loading faster and smoother" along with minor changes to the hoe and pickaxe along with smoother loading "of areas with a lot of terrain modifications".

Here's what else changed:

  • Swamp draugr spawner location fix to prevent draugrs from spawning inside stones
  • Lox pet-sfx fix
  • Torches in locations should no longer support constructions
  • Dolmen location stone size fix
  • New terrain modification system
  • Terrain-modification priority changed (Terrain modifications in an area should load before buildings, only applies to the new terrain modification system)
  • World loading tweaks (to fix issues with ships and buildings getting damaged while loading)
  • Stop server list download when leaving the start menu (to decrease network bandwidth usage)
  • Lowered the amount of stone required to Raise ground using the hoe

The draugr spawning fixes is going to be very welcome. I've lost count of the amount of times a draugr archer inside a stone shot me to death - very annoying. Should make the Swamp a bit less brutal. Less stone to raise the ground is a good one too, that should please players making big builds without creative modes.

Now that such a major back-end upgrade is out, what are you hoping for in the next content update?

Buy Valheim on the Humble Store or Steam.

I'd like more challenging mobs. Not necessarily more aggressive, there's a lot to be said for the long peaceful interludes, but when a mob or a gang of mobs decides I'm the bad guy I'd like to be frightened. "Find your A game or get killed" s/b a thing. And a mass assault on your base should be terrifying.
Seriously. Once you get up in gear, you end up just going on a punching spree, just for amusement.

Quite true.
But the mob damage is not really the problem, at least when it comes to trolls. For large parts of the game, their damage is frightening. Can easily kill you in one or two hits.
Especially in combination with shaman poisons.

However, it is relatively easy to just run away from them and pelt them with arrows.

What is frightening is the enemies not actually going for you, but for your cart/boat/etc. I think that could be emphasized a bit more - make them go for your stuff more often while you are out adventuring. And announce it, of course, so you actually have a chance to react and not just find your ship smashed when you come back.
Took a while, but we figured out that the Trolls don't like being shot in the belly! Does extra damage there. Now with the Draugr Fang, even with normal arrows, I take down a Troll in 3 or 4 shots to the gut.

Regular trolls are relatively weak with decent enough gear, so I just hit them few times with an atgeir. Wouldn't be able to reach higher than gut though...

They also stagger if you shoot them in the head, which gives you moment to get some distance or deal some extra damage.

Trolls have their uses though, so it's better not to kill them right away. Chopping down trees is the usual side effect if they chase you in the forest, but even more useful is to use them as mining helpers. Just stand on top of ore, wait until troll is ready to strike and sprint away before it hits. Repeat until you have more ore than you can carry.

For getting rid of trees, later in the game lox are better than trolls. As they charge towards whatever is pestering them, trees are common collateral damage. Better to tame or kill them if they spawn close to your base...

I'll put spoiler tag just in case somebody wants to get surprised with the events.

Spoiler, click me
Troll attack is terrifying if don't have good enough base defenses. Imagine what kind of damage trolls do to the trees. Then imagine same kind of damage to base made out of wood. I made moat early enough so damage was limited and with my plains base plains mobs will kill some of the trolls.

Also drake seem to go for the boar pen. Luckily I built a roof just for aesthetics. I would suppose mobs from other events could do the same, but only drake fly over my moat.

Quoting: NezchanAlso, a way to make flat roof pieces that don't degrade quickly as they get rained on would be super.

Later in the game stone floor acts also as a roof. As a compromise earlier in the game, 26 degree thatch roof can be walked on. For 45 degree ones you need a ladder. Just place it on the roof and you can that way get to the top of the roof. If you have a wooden beam at the top, you can walk on that and do some repairs or whatever else you want to do while you're up there.
