GZDoom continues maturing as a game engine to play the classics including the Doom series, Heretic and Hexen and more along with developers using it to make their own games (like the upcoming Selaco).
The latest and greatest is out now with GZDoom 4.6.0 as it continues to polish up the experience.
Here's the highlights of what's new:
- Widescreen graphics for Heretic and Hexen
- Sprite shadows like in the Build engine. Both in software and hardware renderer.
- 16 bit channel PNG files can be read
- DEHEXTRA working properly now
- Various enhancements and fixes for ZScript.

Wait, the site says "ZDoom" now, not GZDoom. The project's name has shortened up or some?

The primary port, GZDoom, sports advanced hardware (OpenGL) and enhanced software rendering capabilities, while the port LZDoom serves as an alternative with a different feature set, detailed below. Although the parent ZDoom codebase has been discontinued, the latest official release is available here for posterity.

I was always under the impression Hexen/Heretic already had widescreeen support :DIt's sprites for melee weapons that were extended to the right. For example, that's how original punching looks like:

If your display is wider, it doesn't look good.

I've only had a chance to play the first half-dozen levels or so, but I must say they did a fine job on it.

Amazing release, I was always under the impression Hexen/Heretic already had widescreeen support :DBlade of Agony is the best GZDoom mod game I've ever seen. Played episode 1 (on GZDoom 4.5.0), so I will continue now with episode 2 (on GZDoom 4.6.0). Let's hope they stay compatible. ;)
