As Epic Games continue ignoring Linux with their store, the Heroic Games Launcher picks up that slack and it has a new release now available for you. Reminder: since the Epic Store doesn't support Linux, the Heroic Games Launcher will download Windows games which will then run through a compatibility layer like Wine.

Heroic is actually pretty great, and does most of what you would expect from a game launcher. Quite a lot of titles work well, although as usual for unsupported titles some don't work at all so your mileage will vary.

The 1.7.0 "Moria" release of Heroic now has a better download system, so it will continue downloads instead of going back to 0% (hooray!), there's a new option to enable NVIDIA Prime Render Offload for you Optimus users and a Wiki button is included now too.

Some UI changes will be needed, as the resume feature isn't obvious as you need to hit Cancel to get the option to pick up the download again later but it works at least.

What else is new?

  • Fixed an old bug where big installations were being interrupted
  • Fixed another old bug where Heroic wasn't finding Steam Proton on Ubuntu and derivatives
  • Fixed missing Unreal Marketplace Assets introduced on 1.6.1
  • Updated Electron to version 12, making it use fewer resources. In some cases almost 15% less RAM (from around 140MB to 110MB sometimes)
  • Removed some other dependencies that might give some better performance overall as well.

That's great feedback!
We will need to think on how this would be more intuitive. Maybe adding a stop button close to the progress bar or adding a stop button close to the cancel and removing the dialog.

Next version will be better since we will also have other visual improvements.

And thanks for sharing news about heroic here 😁

If you do something like that, I wouldn't call it "stop", I'd call it "pause"--which has that implication that you can continue. "Stop" sounds a bit more final.

True. Pause makes more sense. 👍

I still don't understand the use of Electron in this. Rare doesn't require it and does similar things.

I still don't understand the use of Electron in this. Rare doesn't require it and does similar things.

But that's simple. would you like to have only one option for everything?
I mean, you use Linux and do you ask why there is arch if Ubuntu already exists?

Also, when I started heroic rare wasn't launched yet, they got back to the project after heroic start I know because we talk a lot
us, devs from heroic, rare and legendary. This is not a competition, we are all friends.

We make open source code and we are proud of that.

Why electron? Simple, because its the only language I know since I work with it, not electron but Web tech. And this is the way I found out to contribute to open source.

Why can't people simple be happy that we have several options and everyone can use anything they like?

That's the good about open source, am I wrong?
You don't have to use anything that you don't want to. Simple be happy that you have people working to make open source software. 🙂

This was not a personal or professional attack. I appreciate projects like this and people like you for creating something that didn't exist to fill a need/want in the Linux ecosystem.

I have a strong disdain for the bloated electron framework. This isn't simply "Why use this when X exists?" There's already too many apps that I have to use that requires it (Slack for work, for example).

Then again I'm not the target market for this. If I needed/wanted a game from the EGS I'd likely us it directly via Wine or use legendary.

So, I also don't understand why the hate with electron. In the past electron was really bloated and was using several mb of memory. But as any other tech, it evolves.

Also, electron is another oss project, if companies like slack are using it is because it is good, easy to develop and give too many possibilities to the devs.

I know you're not attacking me, I didn't understand that. But if you talk something like this, that we don't need it because there is another project that does the same. This makes all the idea about freedom of choice pointless.

Like you said, if you need epic you can use legendary, rare, now imagine that the only option for that was using Egs emulated on wine like it was until before?

Cheers man! Let's make the Linux Community nice again 😝

I tried to run the latest version of rare but after fixing missing packages with sudo apt --fix-broken install it failed to start because of the 'pypresence' distribution was not found. It does not install anything to the applications menu and must be started from the command line. There is no documentation of wine/dxvk settings or syncing with existing games.
