Valve and CodeWeavers have once again updated Proton Experimental, bringing with it a needed fix for Resident Evil Village running on Linux.

It was only a few days ago Proton Experimental was updated to get RE Village working but it came with one big drawback. Previously you couldn't change any graphics settings in-game but as of the latest May 12 build, this has now been solved with Proton Experimental. So that marks another AAA Windows-supported game working nicely on Linux thanks to the Proton compatibility layer - such fast paced improvements!

The latest build of Proton Experimental also fixed up the latest 2K Games launcher, to give even more titles a better experience when played on Linux.

If you're not clear on what Proton and Steam Play are, be sure to check out our constantly updated dedicated page. It's a special compatibility layer for running Windows games and apps from Steam on Linux.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

You can buy Resident Evil Village from Humble Store and Steam.

I love that this is playable straight out of the box now (presumably), but I just went to take a look on Steam and not only is it a cool £65, it's also hampered by Denuvo DRM. I can stomach the former, but I don't buy anything related to the latter, so it's a no from me.

Game looks great too, although I've watched a couple of Twitch streams on it and while it's very pretty, everyone's main complaint is that it's trivially easy. I wonder if they'll add in a hard mode after you complete the game, perhaps?

But as long as it has Denuvo, I ain't touching it.

I fricking love it: Linux has better dx12 support than windows 7 (which doesn't at all). I know win7 is no longer supported but it is still used by 15% of win users!

The other day, one of my windows friends was saying he would have to update to win10 to play REVIII. I had to repress myself from shouting triumphantly "OR TO UPGRADE TO LINUX, THE GAME WORKS THERE TOO! HUH!?" but sadly the game only had initial support at that point :( Now I may have another chance :D

My point is we've come a long way

Doesn't vkd3d also work on windows? In that case it would have the same support.

I've heard that its hardest mode is VERY hard, harder than Inferno in RE 3.

I would definitely buy and play it, if I wasn't kind of sensitive to horror and gore

Horror isn't my thing either. How I ever completed Amnesia the dark descent in High school I'll never understand. Much like Amnesia Rebirth isn't as scary as TDD, REVIII is not as scary as REVII. I could barely stomach 30 minutes in REVII and yet I've played hours of REVIII on Stadia. It is a really easy horror game with some jump scares thrown in to keep you on your toes.

If Google wasn't giving away a free Stadia Premiere edition with REVIII I likely would've ordered it on Steam. Hopefully an FOV slider gets added to all platforms soon.

The FOV is brutal. I was getting slightly queasy watching FuryForge playing it on Twitch. Lovely looking game too, such a shame it's like watching it through a telescope.

But why? There are so many other great games, what makes this one so special? From what I've seen of it, I really couldn't understand the appeal. I'm not hating on it, I'm genuinely asking, because usually I at least to some degree get the hype for certain games, but on this one I'm really lost.
