After the huge 4.0 release back in April that added in the Vulkan renderer, a new update for Warzone 2100 is in need of testing as they clean up a backlog of bug fixes. Info: Warzone 2100 was originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive and was release in 1999, much later it was open sourced in 2004 and the legacy of it continues on as a completely free game. To this day it's still one of the most innovative RTS games around.

Warzone 2100 4.1 Beta 1 is not just bug fixing though, there's plenty of improvements to be found throughout Warzone 2100 4.1 Beta 1. Some of the highlights include (full changelog):

  • Fix fog, add an option to toggle it on
  • Merge of the "camBalance" mod that revamps campaign balance and fixes numerous issues
  • Numerous multiplayer balance tweaks (see full changelog for details)
  • New design menu stats delta display
  • Add a single player quit confirmation screen
  • Allow building modules/derricks in a row (with drag & build)
  • Add support for binding same keys to multiple actions in non-conflicting contexts
  • Allow assigning key bindings to mouse keys
  • Add "selection without group" hotkeys
  • Move the whole group to the target location, not only the command droid
  • New cheat `makemehero` makes selected units hero rank
  • Fix: Several crash & UI soft-lock issues
  • Fix: Various save-loading issues
  • Fix: Do not handle RMB click while panning the camera
  • Fix: Unclosable panels and flicker when using the Intelligence map and Design menus
  • Many other bug fixes

See the official site and the 4.1 Beta 1 release announcement.

Just as a reminder, if you wish to run the Linux build through Steam you can actually do so thanks to the Luxtorpeda project which we covered in a previous article.

I wish they would release a non-snap, non .deb binary version though. given how many people use Manjaro/Arch or similar distros these days for gaming. (yes I am aware that snap works on Manjaro, but I am against snaps on principle that they use a centralized server for primary distribution.)

There's a Flatpak available on Flathub. That said, I agree having a distribution-neutral .zip/.tar.gz release would be nice.

They have source code in tar.xz, tar.gz and zip format. These are distribution neutral.
