Another smaller update to Proton Experimental has arrived, the special version of Proton where the latest enhancements come in before rolling out to the main Proton builds. If you're not clear on what Proton and Steam Play are, be sure to check out our constantly updated dedicated page.

With Proton Experimental 2021/07/09 here's what's changed:

  • Performance improvements for Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
  • Fixed layout for Logitech G920 steering wheel controllers.
  • Updated VKD3D-Proton to 2.4

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

Great. Also mentioned in changelog: support for Nvidia DLSS. Would be interesting to hear some feedback or to see test/benchmarks.

I wonder when they will add support for Mass Effect Legendary Edition?

RT support in general would be nice especially for Amid Evil, that needs DX 12

I'm playing Doom Eternal right now and the DLSS is making some difference to me.
On my RTX2060 at the Nightmare Preset and 3440x1440@75Hz, without DLSS I get around ~60fps, with DLSS on Quality, something around 70FPS and I can get 75FPS with the Balanced Preset.
I still haven't tested without Vsync but for me, the experience is nice so far.
I tried Raytracing as well. It's working good but my card wasn't made for that at least not at this resolution.
Even with the preset on Medium and DLSS on Performance, I can get 35FPS max with RT enabled. But at least the effect is working really well.

I hope they fix the long loading time for DX12 titles....

Its working pretty sweet here. RdR2 benchmark at 3440x1440, ultra settings, dlss at auto. 98fps. Same as windows
