With a whole decoration system coming, survival game Vintage Story is going to be expanding in a big way with the upcoming Homesteading update that has a Release Candidate out now.

Vintage Story is an uncompromising wilderness survival sandbox game inspired by lovecraftian horror themes. You're probably tempted to say "hey it looks like Minecraft", but this is far away from it. Having played it, it's clearly aiming at a different market. You find yourself in a ruined world reclaimed by nature and permeated by unnerving temporal disturbances. Everything about it takes time, it's a slow and thoughtful game with some pretty deep game mechanics.

This new 1.15 update will bring with it a decoration sysem with Carpets, Wallpapers and other quasi-blocks that do not obstruct normal blocks, Slanted roof blocks, Pies, 6 new tree variants with new logs and planks, new farmable tropical crops, new ferns, improved world generation for bamboo, ferntrees and more. That's hardly scratching the surface as there's also new crafting mechanics, new blocks, experimental rope simulation, new weapons, new seasonal foliage, new music tracks, you can make cave drawings and so on. I absolutely need to spend a lot more time with this game. Brutal at the beginning with a learning curve but I adore it.

You can buy it from Humble Store, itch.io and the official site.

This game is absolutely amazing :)

These months I've not played anything, but I'm not sure if play something like this or like Valheim.

Can anyone compare a bit?

Just a relaxing experience to pass some time 2-3 times a week on summer?

I'm under the impression that, like Minecraft, this game has DRM and you must login everytime you play. Yuck.

Well, Vintage Story and Valheim are kinda different, but in some ways kinda similar.

Valheim is more an arcade type of survival game, and mechanics are simple, building etc is easy, crafting too, getting resources too (crafting in Valheim is something similar what you can see in World of Warcraft). Combat is fun, and a little bit like in Dark Souls, but easier and not so frustrating. But still it's lovely game with a lot of atmosphere. Very relaxing and definitely worth it.

Vintage Story in the other hand is similar, but If I think of atmosphere and chillout. Setting is different however. Valheim is based on Nordic mythology. Vintage Story is more horror-like, situated in some deviation of world based on the mythology created by H.P. Lovecraft. In the mechanics it's much more complicated and challenging. It involves a lot of complicated crafting, with getting resources by crafting - for example, you have to melt an copper, and create copper bar from it. You have to prepare furnace, and almost manually do the rest. You can dig really deep in VS, but to find for example iron, you have to think, find traces of it on the surface first, then dig. Combat is similar to Minecraft, but a little bit more dynamic and skill based. Also, very relaxing and definitely worth it :D

Tough choice.

Thank you very much for your explanation, I hope is useful also for others.
There are many games, and comparing them it helps to decide, maybe GOL can do this kind of comparison between games.

For what you say to me, I think Valheim is more appropriate for me. I have other hobbies and I cannot invest many time on thinking about mechanics. Also looks nicer.

Just once, actually. Then it lets you play offline whenever. It doesn't make it any less annoying, though.

I would think that would actually make it somewhat less annoying. Perfect, no, but there's a serious difference in annoyance level there.
