With the upcoming Steam Deck from Valve only (currently) coming in one colour, it's fun to imagine what it would look like if you could customize the casing colours - so let's try it out.

One of our readers Grady Vuckovic mentioned in our Discord Channel a little tool they made, which allows you to customize a few parts of a Steam Deck image and it actually works quite well. It's been fun to play around with possible colouring and I can't help but now actually want some official variants. Hopefully once the Steam Deck is out, perhaps we might see some fun skins to stick over it. It's a portable after-all, we want to show it off right?

Perhaps you want it to be bright and get some heads turning?

Or maybe a little like another handheld console we all know.

PC Gamer is one of a few who got to visit Valve recently, and it seems colour discussions are going on so maybe we will eventually see some. The main reason for it being in one colour right now is more of a "logistics thing" Valve said, as "Having a lot of SKUs in the market is just a lot more complicated".

Give it a go and show off in the comments your ideal colours for the Steam Deck.

cheater! The buttons can't be colored in the tool, can they?
Anyway, this looks slick.

Nice. Now I could finish a scheme based on Sweet-Mars KColor Scheme :)

Quoting: dubigrasu[...]I would've love to hear an opinion from someone heavily accustomed with the pads on the Steam Controller, are the new pads big enough?
The SteamDeck pads are supposed to be the same width/height as the circular ones on the Steam Controller (in other words, the circle can fit inside the square) and those were pretty much the perfect size.
Where was that mentioned?
I'm looking at this guy who's doing a DIY of a steam deck, and (supposing that he got measurements right) the SC pads seems to be quite bigger then the new ones.

If he's right about it, this kinda sucks, as they are puny in size.

My source was Reddit, so I guess it should be taken with a grain of salt:

Steam Controller pads are circles, 40 mm in diameter. Source: I just measured mine.
That would make a surface area of 1256 mm² per circular pad.
Going with 32.5 mm as the given measurement for the Deck pads, that would be a surface area of 1056 mm² per square pad.

Looks like they simply cut the circle down to a square. Rough cut:

Damm, that sucks...
Also the placement seems a bit more inconvenient. Most of the reviewers are ignoring the pads, and I've seen only few seconds of someone using them, with the thumb forced down in an awkward and what seems to be an uncomfortable position for long sessions. On the SC the pad is placed perfectly (whereas on the deck the joystick is placed perfectly), less strain for the thumb, but imagine having the pad below that and twist your thumb to reach it.
Hope I'm worried for nothing though.
