Valve and CodeWeavers are working towards a fresh release of Proton with plenty of goodies including like more games working, and plenty of bug fixes too. If you don't know what Steam Play Proton is be sure to check our dedicated page.

Proton 6.3-6 has a first Release Candidate build available for testing, which you can try out directly in the Steam Client on Linux. However, it comes with a major change for save files that needs testing and so any game you want to try with it - ensure you've looked up how to backup your save. It's supposed to fix the Steam cloud sync feature for a number of games and should auto-migrate but it's a test build - you've been warned. This save adjustment should help Guilty Gear -Strive-, Death Stranding, Katamari Damacy Reroll and Scarlet Nexus.

These games should be playable without workarounds with this version:

  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Tokyo Xanadu eX+
  • Sonic Adventure 2
  • Rez Infinite
  • Elite Dangerous
  • Blood of Steel
  • Homeworld Remastered Collection
  • Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
  • eFootball PES 2021
  • Guardians VR
  • 3D Aim Trainer

More improvements came too like better cursor capturing behaviour for fullscreen windows, input handling was improved when focus is lost in a few games like Project Cars 3, Warhammer: Chaosbane, and Far Cry Primal. This release also upgrades various parts of the tech stack like wine-mono to 6.3, DXVK to 1.9.1, VKD3D-Proton to 2.4 and FAudio to 20.08.

You will also find that this release also pulls in support for NVAPI GPU support library and DLSS, although disabled by default you can enable it with PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1.

Other fixes and improvements include:

  • Fix Microsoft Flight Simulator hang while loading.

  • Fix Unreal Engine 4 update installation, which impacted Everspace 2, The Turing Test, and KARDS.

  • Fix text input and clipboard pasting in Origin overlay and launcher.

  • Fix some music not playing in Planet Coaster.

  • Improve non-English experience in Cyberpunk 2077 and Rockstar Games launchers.

  • Improve launcher behavior in Swords of Legends Online.

  • Fix Mafia III: Definitive Edition performance when FPS limiter is enabled.

  • Fix audio playback issues in Fallout: New Vegas, Oblivion, Borderlands 3, and Deep Rock Galactic.

  • Improve video playback in Deep Rock Galactic, The Medium, Nier: Replicant, and Contra: Rogue Corps.

How to test it:

  1. Search for Proton 6.3 in Steam
  2. Right click and go to Properties
  3. Go to the Betas tab
  4. Select proton-6.3-6-rc from the dropdown box

Note: it will still say it's an older build despite being a newer one.

I noticed with 6.3.5 some intro videos started to play. At least I think that it was 6.3.5. Did anybody else notice that?

Elite Dangerous is now playable without workarounds?? If true, that's a huge amount of .Net work that's happened behind the scenes - their launcher is an absolute abomination and a constant source of pain.

Yep! Since wine-mono 6.2, .NET has no longer been required. Esme (of Codeweavers) ported WPF from .NET Core into wine-mono.

I've been following Elite Dangerous on Proton sinced it was borked (with the CRC error) - so I'm genuinely excited to see it will now be Platinum.

This comment made me try "Seven: Enhanced Edition" again since I remembered the intro videos didn't work in that game -- and lo and behold, they do work under this version of proton. The game itself seems to run way better now too.

Hmmm . . . I wonder if it's worth trying again the only game I ever bought hoping to use Proton, Galactic Civilizations 3. It has a dodgy launcher too.

Quotetesting a major change for save files

...I'll pass, but I salute to everyone who's helping test this new method. As they said, the real treasure is the save files we made along the way, and every save files lost is a tragedy.

Anyone knows what this is about? Did they auto-adjust casing? :D

I really hope with this new version of Proton, it fixes some of the media foundation issues that some of my jrpg games have, like Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force. Doing a workaround is a pain in the ass and I really want to play my jrpg's without doing a lot of work arounds. I hope this becomes feasible with this release. I am really happy that Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ works out of the box now without using Proton GE with this beta release

Basically just what Liam points out in the article, I think:

QuoteIt's supposed to fix the Steam cloud sync feature

It's not a bug I've come across, but "losing your save" is probably quite a high priority bug to address.
