Following on from the Release Candidate testing earlier this month, Steam Play Proton 6.3-6 has rolled out to improve Windows games running on Linux. If you don't know what Steam Play Proton is be sure to check our dedicated page.

Along with updating lots of the software behind the scenes like wine-mono to 6.3, DXVK to 1.9.1, VKD3D-Proton to 2.4 and FAudio to 20.08 there's a number of other specific improvements in this release. Cloud save syncing was improved for multiple titles including Guilty Gear -Strive-, Death Stranding, Katamari Damacy Reroll and Scarlet Nexus. Video playback improved for: Deep Rock Galactic, The Medium, Nier: Replicant, and Contra: Rogue Corps. Plus non-English support for Cyberpunk 2077 and Rockstar Games launchers was improved, launcher behaviour in Swords of Legends Online was improved too.

With this release these games should be playable without needing to do manual fixes:

  • Tokyo Xanadu eX+
  • Sonic Adventure 2
  • Rez Infinite
  • Elite Dangerous
  • Blood of Steel
  • Homeworld Remastered Collection
  • Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
  • Guardians VR
  • 3D Aim Trainer

There's more too with a fix for Microsoft Flight Simulator, Unreal Engine 4 update installation improvements to help Everspace 2 and KARDS, Origin overlay and launcher text input and pasting fixes, a fix for some music not playing in Planet Coaster, Mafia III: Definitive Edition performance should be better when using an FPS limiter, audio playback fixes for Fallout: New Vegas, Oblivion, Borderlands 3, and Deep Rock Galactic, improved cursor capturing for fullscreen windows and input handling after focus loss in some games, including Warhammer: Chaosbane and Far Cry Primal.

Overall it's a pretty big and impressive release with lots of nice fixes across the board. Additionally, Proton Experimental was updated for all the 6.3-6 changes.

Full changelog as always can be seen on GitHub.

Kotor1, great. Now I'm playing it with gog release using wine.

I've tried it now quickly with proton and it seems fine albeit when tried to switch antialiasing on, textures are gone only white colour instead.

One game i really want to play, "Ultimate Space Commando", still doesn’t launch at all, with all Proton and EG versions i tried, and command lines.

One day, maybe, one day...

Good to see more and more games playable, but the bad side is maybe less native ones from devs...

You might wanna report this to DXVK https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk (if there isn’t already an issue report) or try DXVK master first. Based on 30 seconds internet research this games uses D3D9.

I can't find any bugs filed about that game. Consider filing one if you have time.

This had a significant performance improvement in Cyberpunk 2077 too! I had some stuttering at times earlier, they seem to be gone now, thus far. At least much much less frequent.

Question: anyone else unable to start Witcher 3 with this one? Solved by deleting the old /compatdata/ . Starts smoothly now.

You know, until Steam Play Proton matured a bit, Linux gaming was truly a desert. Now the progress is phenomenal. Thanks for sticking with the community until developers responded, Liam. Hopefully you are seeing some rewards now, we sure are.
