We continue seeing lots of quick fixes coming into Proton Experimental, the special testing version of the Steam Play Proton compatibility layer with another release up now. This is the software that enables you to run Windows games and applications on Linux with Steam. If you wish to know more about Steam Play and Proton do check out our dedicated section.

As of the October 27 release of Proton Experimental, here's all the new changes:

  • Fix Project CARS 3 ignoring inputs after Alt+Tab.
  • Fix stuck Alt key after Alt+Tabbing out and back for Warhammer: Chaosbane.
  • Fix Age of Empires II HD Edition and possibly other games failing to render anything after displaying a video.
  • Improve Control windowing.
  • Update vkd3d-proton to include the latest development work

The Proton changelog can be found here.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

Are these changes brought into proton-ge quickly or should I swap to proton experimental to test these changes out?

Nvm just realized proton-ge upstreams these changes long before experimental goes live.

Mmmm... Let's hope they catch up real quick... That's the kind of release that needs to be supported day one, on Proton. Could be a sore spot for the Steam Deck.
