Another update to Proton Experimental has landed as of October 11 bringing with it more fixes and even more Windows games are now working on Linux. Proton is a compatibility layer, based upon Wine, allowing Windows games to run on Linux.

Newly playable as of this update are GreedFall, Eve Online and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. Additionally there's a fix implemented for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare hanging on exit, the Paradox Launcher has improved "windowing", there's a fix for regressions from a previous release, crashes solved for older CPUs that lack the timestamp counter and crashes also fixed for some FNA/XNA games.

The Proton changelog can be found here.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

The intro video of Greedfall still doesn't work, but the game proper launches just fine. That's with Proton Experimental. Every other version I've tried (including GE) just instantly crashes

Quoting: RTherenGreedfall is an absolute must play for any fans of action adventure games with RPG elements.
I played it without problems on Proton GE some time ago.

I've thus far bought and refunded GF three times. Just outright could not get it to work (including with mf workarounds). Not even launch. This is the game I've been waiting for.

I must've been lucky then. I hope you get it running soon, because it's really REALLY good.

Just got the alert for GreedFall Gold on steam sale. Installing now

...

my Proton Experimental install broke shortly after first boot of GreedFall. I got to play it for the grand total of roughly 3 minutes. So that sucked.

I tried again, and came to the same conclusion: now the game only starts using Proton Experimental, other versions failed.
I remember playing it a few month after it release, using the Media Foundation fix, without any issues though... I wonder if they changed something to the game since ?

OK. Got it working. It turns out Proton Experimental can't update while being used by a game. I've never seen this mentioned anywhere, ever. Resolved by switching GreedFall to another Proton, uninstalling PE, reinstalling and restarting Steam. Re-selected PE, which allowed GreedFall to launch perfectly, including the intro video & full menu.

I'm now mostly just pissed that it took me a full week to figure that out.

Hang on, what? That's potentially very useful information. I tried Proton with the one Windows game I own on Steam (Galactic Civilizations III) some time back and it didn't work, tried Experimental and it didn't work either (the launcher started . . . bloody launchers). Now that quite a bit of time has passed, I tried again, assuming Experimental would have seen a bunch of updating so things might be different. It was just the same . . . but does this mean I was actually just trying the same old version of Proton Experimental from back then? Argh.

It's worth checking, for sure.

It could be I just got really weirdly unlucky and hit a one-time bug that had a REALLY OBVIOUS tell. Cos trust me, you would know if you hit the issue I did. It was pretty much impossible to miss unless you never ever look at your Steam downloads window. I'm basically assuming PE can't update in use cos that's the most logical conclusion atm
