ChimeraOS (previously called GamerOS) is a Linux distribution aimed at full-screen devices and console styled couch-gaming, much in the same way that SteamOS is.

In the years since Valve stopped updating SteamOS 2, ChimeraOS has plugged a rather nice gap for such devices and the developer continues to make improvements. ChimeraOS 27 just rolled out with the usual assortment of main software tech upgrades including Linux 5.14.15, Mesa 21.2.4, NVIDIA 495.44, RetroArch 1.9.11 and more.

Apart from that the main changes for this release include a fix for touch screen orientation on AYA NEO (and potentially other similar devices), a switch from yabause to kronos core for Saturn games (BIOS now required) and it also now skips the Steam startup animation.

So a small release overall but still some nice overall improvements.

What does ChimeraOS look like? Well, if you've used Steam Big Picture, it's just that. The point is to give you a good experience out of the box for controller input and gaming.

You can download from the official site.

You might want to be careful with this upgrade, it didn't boot for me on my Ryzen 3200G box and I had to reinstall and downgrade to the earlier release.
The ChimeraOS creator was super helpful on the Discord though so no complaints, just something to keep in mind.

How did you downgrade? I wiped ChimeraOS and installed a more standard Arch flavour after all proton games stopped working in a new version and they said that "downgrades are not supported".

Lately I've been using my desktop systems with Manjanro and installed their chimera's "steamcompositor-plus" and "chimera" (former steam-buddy) scripts from AUR to get the same seamless SteamOS experience if needed (without the auto-update) and a full desktop for work.

Though for an exclusive tv gaming box, plain chimera is still by recomendation.

Quoting: EMO GANGSTERI installed this on a pc and didn't care for it
Then, why did you installed it in the first place?

Is interesting that the support for Aya Neo happened because the ChimeraOS dev received the device from the Aya Neo themselves.
Valve on the other hand, while they also promised one, they haven't done so yet.

It's a recently implemented script, the instructions are on the ChimeraOS discord under 'help'. I suppose it'll be more officially implemented later, the dev wrote the script the other day to help me with my issues.

Anyway, the instructions on the discord are:
"I updated the install/upgrade script, you can download it here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ChimeraOS/frzr/master/frzr-deploy

After downloading the script, you can run the following commands to downgrade permanently to ChimeraOS 26:
1. sudo systemctl stop frzr-autoupdate
2. sudo systemctl disable frzr-autoupdate
3. chmod +x frzr-deploy
4. sudo ./frzr-deploy chimeraos/chimeraos:26
5. sudo reboot"

Quoting: Guestanybody aware which distro chimera os is based off? i guess ubuntu?
Arch, right now and for the foreseeable future.
But it does not matter for the user, as ChimeraOS is a read-only gaming appliance-type system. You can have only minimal customization for the user.
You can also force the system in read-write mode, but only until the next update, when you received the new image. And that might be theoretically based on any other distro without the user noticing.
