1047 Games recently released a big update to Splitgate, their free to play first-person shooter with portals to enable players to make more interesting Custom Games.

You're not just limited to casual and competitive modes, as you can also make your own with various rules. This November update includes an overhaul to custom game lobbies, an easier way to edit the game modes and maps. This new system looks a lot better, with you easily picking through various main modes each with different variants available with a lot more presets to choose from. The new game settings UI is also adjusted so it's split between things like Map, Mode, Team and Player options where you can really tweak all the individual bits - like giving each team different options.

To make it even easier, you can also save and load custom game options now too. Additionally this update also solves various exploits across a few maps.

There's a huge amount of customizable options for the game now, it's looking pretty awesome.

Sadly though, it seems for all the hype surrounding it and the huge amount of funding they received that its popularity has quickly vanished, at least on Steam. It's managed to drop from over 60,000 players to only around 5,000 at a time on Steam. Hopefully they will be able to pull it back a bit with big future updates, as it's looking a little rough, especially with other bigger releases happening.

You can play free on Steam.

The use of space in the UI is one of the less efficient I have ever seen. Fortunately, the string "NEW!" is reused 12 000 times everywhere and that is efficient…

Yes, the UI is quite inefficient currently, but that feels like a trend with console-first interfaces. It's getting better though, and even more with this update.

However, that seems like a very small improvement, and not something that should have taken months. Looking at their former job posting made me wonder if they were approaching this correctly (web devs basically, no low level back-end expert or game engine dev, so I figure they didn't want a team with a diverse skill-set, just more of the same): I think they were blind to their shortcomings, and I hope that's changing.

I would really like to see LAN (offline) functionality, split-screen. For instance, Halo on PC has no split-screen, Splitgate could beat them on that front.

I would rather like them to work on their netcode. Seriously, this game has some of the worst latency issues I've seen in fps shooters. Aiming at someone doesn't hit them, however aiming in front of someone or sometimes even behind them gets you the frags.
And it's not my end. I live in a city with Europe's largest internet hub, usually I get very low pings and I have a 400/20 Mbit connection at home. The only game where it's worse is Natural Selection but Splitgate doesn't have the same charm. No other game is that bad.
Then again they don't show you your ping in this game. This seems really suspicious.

It must really depend on the region, I have no such issues in Australia (despite the notoriously bad internet here).

Splitgate is a lot of fun and I'm really glad to enjoy it on Linux. I will be sad if people get bored of it too fast. Modern gamers are a really tough crowd with too many options and no attention span.

I must admit I got a bit bored. All that grinding really eroded my patience away, so I haven't reconnected since I finished the battle pass.

Daily logins, daily play streak... This isn't duolinguo, this was starting to strain me a bit, so I decided to take a step back.

Plus the UI is so bad. I have like 60 drops to open, that would easily take me 10 minutes. And there aren't that many gamemodes, no splitscreen, weapons are not that distinctive and hard to recognize when an enemy holds them. Starting the game takes a while.

I still like the game, but it has a few flaws that I would like to see addressed.

Grinding for what? I'm still at a loss as to what's the point of getting XP. I just play to win.

Battle pass, daily and season challenges, item challenges. There's a lot to grind, and as a completionist I'm really easily lured into it. I am quite close to gold for a few weapons, and already have the gold BFB.
