A true showcase for not only how good open source software can be but also how to successfully manage every part of it. Blender 3.0 is officially out now. This marks a new and advanced era for open source 2D/3D content creation and the importance of Blender cannot be overstated.

Masses of new features and overall performance improvements have arrived, along with the first iteration of their very own asset browser along with drag and drop support. Blender's Cycles rendering engine also saw huge improvements that they say resulted in "rendering between 2x and 8x faster in real-world scenes". Big improvements to the shadows system to be much more precise, a new backend for AMD GPUs (Linux support on that due in Blender 3.1), big new ways to manipulate text, a visual UI refresh, much faster loading / saving of compressed .blend files and so much more.

"In many ways 3D has become mainstream now. 3D technology is an undeniable part of our lives. In the coming decade it will influence how we communicate and interact with each other and the world. Every large player in the tech industry is anticipating this development. For that reason, it is too important to leave the future only to businesses and shareholder driven practices.

The Blender organization and the community of blender.org are committed to remain an independent force to ensure that old and new ways of creating 3D experiences — whether graphics, film, games or xr — are freely and openly accessible for everyone, disregarding where you come from. With Blender 3.0 we make another step into that direction, as first of the many to be released this decade." — Ton Roosendaal, Blender Foundation.

Hmph. I was living in a 3D world before it was cool.

Don't worry, it'll inevitably go out of fashion. Then it'll be "retro" before you know it.

I've already got my eye on a nice little house in Flatland!

Hmmm, I wonder if property's cheaper there. After all, even if prices were "through the roof", that wouldn't be very high . . .

That feeling when the software you use is getting better at it's job faster than you are at yours.. Oi...
Seriously though, just look at that features showrool? Damn that was slick, it feels like something from a big corp for a very expensive product. The level of polish the Blender Foundation put into everything these days, their devs, designers, writers, etc, is just outstanding.

Someone get that nail an xray, because Liam just smacked it pretty hard on the head.

Blender 3.1 is planned to have quite a lot of excellent new features as well. And work has begun on a major rewrite for Eevee, that should add an impressive new feature set and great performance optimisations. For 2D, 3D, Real time and Offline rendering, Blender is going to be on top of the whole industry by the end of this year. Simply unstoppable.

Blender is OP!

calm down, for real time it still has a long way to go, for example, there is no game engine backend for it (upbge and armory forks dont have an good workflow)
and unreal tech is impressive too, game engines are starting to enter other industries like movies, architecture, illustration, engineering, and commercial advertising, while blender quited the gaming niche completely.

it will be a though competition, unreal lack modeling tools (actually it lack a lot of things) while blender dont have killer features like nanite and lumen or any realtime scripting / game related feature.

It's a great thing, it's a sign of how professional and high quality the Blender project has become. =D
It's exactly the kind of thing which would give studios faith to make the leap to transition to Blender away from other software.
