There's been some reports circulating thanks to YouTuber Tyler McVicker (previously known as Valve News Network) that goes into some detail about what Valve is up to. Seems like we might get an RTS/FPS hybrid for the Steam Deck. It seems that Half-Life 3 continues to not be a thing too.

Sounds like it will be called Citadel, or perhaps Half-Life: Citadel and will be "a co-operative, competitive, asymmetric, third-person, first-person, RTS, FPS, shooter-hybrid thing that takes place in the Half-Life universe" according to McVicker. Matches seem like they will be some sort of battle between NPCs, with you earning things to give to them using a wave-based system for the battling. The video states that Source 2 has been significantly upgraded with a new lighting system, and new NPC systems too. It's a lot to take in and sounds pretty wild.

You can listen to McVicker's latest video on it below explaining more after the original video that got picked up across the internet:

The key thing to remember is that Valve often works on projects that never see a release. They flick between things, often prototyping and some little hints end up shipping inside other games, which is often where McVicker and others get their information from. Nothing at all is confirmed, it's pure speculation but fun regardless as we're always keen to know what Valve has coming next. In a statement to IGN, Valve reminded people that McVicker has "no inside information about what goes on at Valve".

Yeeeees, Zombie Master vibes intensifies.
(Yeah I know, not gonna be zombie themed, but the multiplayer gameplay asymetry is just sooooo fun.)

If done correctly it's gonna be amazing and I do trust Valve whatever they're making.

Half-Life: Renegade?

I feel pretty confident in saying that if the Steam Deck succeeds, Valve will absolutely develop games catering to their own creation. Why wouldn't they?

Sounds like somehting similar to Quantum League or something with Timeloop, but with some strategy elements, maybe building defences etc. Where you play your character for few loops and then watch the action unfold at the end.

Sounds like a RTS/FPS hybrid like Natural Selection (first or second one or Nuclear Dawn?

Probably not (sadly all FPS/RTS hybrids so far have been a commercial failure).

To me it sounds more like trying to bring a Dota2 (and maybe auto-chess) like formula into a FPS game with some additional aspects taken from asymmetric Left4Dead.

This is right, but with the exception of the Savage series. Savage 2 in particular had a great player count and its gameplay is still the best to this day for a hybrid.

Or Battlezone and Battlezone II.

I remember Savage, which had a Linux native version in 2003.

Around 2000-2003 was a good time for Linux gaming too. I was still playing Quake 3 Arena and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory natively. Loki unfortunately closed in 2002, but I was playing a lot of Heavy Gear II, Kohan, Rune and Soldier of Fortune at the time. And on the wine gaming fromt, I was playing Warcraft 3 in Linux.

The question is .... will this resolve the cliffhanger they've left us with for 14 years now?
